WISE PRINCE BY HEAD MARGIN Picks Up 124 Pounds and Triumphs Over Dolly Val and Gay Balko in General Green Purse. SALEM, N H., Oct 8 Felix Spatolas six-year-old Wise Counsellor horse, Wise Prince, with Bierman up, gave further proof that at the moment he is the top horse training and campaigning in New England. He won the General Green Purse here this afternoon, a six furlongs sprint, over a field of nine others, the best that could be assembled. He picked up 124 pounds and took the event by a head from J. Emerys steady Jean Valjean three-year-old filly, Dolly Val. Paul Ando-linos Gay Balko was three lengths off the runner-up in third place. Beach Ensemble, Dunade and Orinoco finished noses apart in the order named. Wise Prince was made a pronounced favorite in the betting, but not until the final step was made could he be called the winner, as Dolly Val was closing determinedly on him after having to go a bit wide at the stretch turn. SETS PACE. Gay Balko went out to make the pace in one of the fastest six furlongs races run here at this meeting. He opened up- a daylight j lead, with Beach Ensemble, Dunade, Dolly Val and Wise Prince following in the order named and lapped on each other. Before a quarter mile had been run Wise Prince worked his way into second position andi was reducing the leaders margin with every stride. Dolly Val in the meantime was racing prominently and as she made her movo on the far turn Beach Ensemble forced her to go a bit wide and she finally landed out close to the middle of the track. Maloney applied the gad and she came again determinedly and appeared to be ready to take the lead, as Gay Balko began to tire. Just at this moment Wise Prince raced up on even terms with her and in the drive that ensued Wise Prince was able to get his head in front. SUBSTITUTE AFFAIR. The General Green was an allowance af- fair, substituted for the General Green j Handicap, which originally was scheduled j for a mile and a sixteenth with ,500 added money. Nobody could be induced to race against Wise Prince when the entries closed and it was found that Dolly Val and Wise Prince were the only eligibles named overnight. The General Green at six furlongs was then substituted, and conditions were written, which permitted horses of all ages . to engage and under various weights, according to their earnings. Wise Prince, under the conditions was forced to take up the same weight he had been handicapped at in the added money affair. The winners share of the ,000 was ,400. The weather was the most pleasant of the meeting. A bright warm sun shone on the! , course and skies were clear. The track was at its best the Wise Counsellor gelding went the three-quarters in 1:11.
