WAR ADMIRAL EASILY "Riddle Champion Runs Away With Rhode Island Handicap. jDrowd of 30,000 Sees Mighty Atom Assert His Superiority Sun-ports Fourth Straight Success. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Nov. 12. War Admiral, 1 champion of Glen Riddle Farms, went j ! to the post in the Rhode Island Handicap at j Narragansett Park today as one of the shortest-priced favorites that ever started in New England and he ran according to the dds, galloping off from an inferior field to score by two and a half lengths. Charley Kurtsinger, his regular pilot, had him under a tight hold as he finished out the mile and an eighth, a journey he completed in 1:51 over a fast track, after coming from behind - a terrific pace. War Admiral was held at jexactly 1 to 5. Closest to him at the end was Ramsey and Coppages Mucho Gusto, which ran a grand, game race against a horse that is far his superior. Trainer Robert Ramsey had said Mucho Gusto would outrun War Admiral early and Mucho Gusto outran the grand - son of Man o War to the half mile post. After he was headed he was tired, but he j ! still had heart. He faltered for a second , -and Busy K. passed him, but he came again courageously under Eddie Smiths flaying gad to take second by a length. Busy K., jundcr the racing silks of i. A. Wood, was third, just a nose in advance of Fair Stein. Gray Jack was another nose back and Pala-mede, coupled in the betting with Mucho "Gusto, trailed the pack of half a dozen. War Admiral added ,340 to his earnings through his score in the 0,000 added stake. The day was sunny and warm and 30,000 fans were out to pay tribute to a great race horse. EARNS ,340. War Admiral was as stubborn and as tem-peramental as usual at the gate, but starter "Buddy" Wingfields assistant handled him carefully. Finally he was sent to the outside of the gate and broke well. Mucho Gusto rushed to the front at once. 1 War Admiral went to him on the clubhouse I turn and the pair made that turn with Mucho Gusto showing a neck in front and going at a streamliners clip. At the head j I of the back stretch Mucho Gusto still re- j tained his lead, the pair some four lengths i j in front of all rivals. But Mucho Gusto was running much harder than War Admiral. I It was exactly at the half mile post that Kurtsinger asked War Admiral the question. - He met a ready response, his mount bounding past Mucho Gusto to take the van by a neck, a half length, a length as they went around the turn. DROPS BACK. When he was headed, Mucho Gusto dropped back and Busy K. passed him but at the head of the stretch, Smith went to work with the whip and Mucho Gusto once more passed Busy K. to take second and hold it to the end. At the eighth post, War Admiral was some half a dozen lengths in front. Kurtsinger looked back. He saw no Seabiscuits after him in this field and he eased up. War Admiral simply cantered as he passed the judges. War Admiral was carrying top weight of 127 pounds, conceding twelve pounds to Mucho Gusto, more to the others.
