CLASSIC STAKES FEES ARE DUE 1939 Running of Arlington Race May Gross 0,000 Gold Trophy to Winning Owner. Carrying 0,000 in added money and likely to gross 0,000 to become one of the richest races for three-year-olds in America, the 1939 Classic. Stakes approached the date of its second payment of fees on November 15, horsemen were reminded by Arlington Park Jockey Club officials here today. The 1939 renewal of the famous Mid-West race for three-year-olds attracted a record number of 152 nominations on July 15. This represented horses front seventy-seven different interests. The 1940 event, which closed July 15, attracted 287 from seventy-two nominators. Under the new "Futurity" conditions introduced this spring by John Hertz and his Arlington associates the 1940 race is expected to gross upwards of 0,000. Willis Sharpe Kilmers Nedayr raced to a surprise victory in the 1938 running of the Classic, defeating such stars as Stagehand, The Chief and Menow. Previous Classic winners were all stars of their respective years, such as Blue Larkspur, Gallant Fox, Mate, Gusto, Inlander, Cavalcade Granville and Flying Scot. As in 1938 a solid gold replica of the historic Coronation Cup won by Mrs. John Hertz Reigh Count in England in 1929 will be presented to the winning owner of the 1939 Classic. This new "Classic-Coronation" Cup is the most valuable trophy in American racing.
