WAR DOG outran his field to the first turn, was placed under light restraint while setting the pace early, then met strong bids from CHIEF ONAWAY in the closing stages. CHIEF ONAWAY raced in his best form, continued in near attendance of the winner and held on deetrminedly while inclined to bear toward the inside while under punishment in the last eighth. BALLOTER, beginning slowly, settled in , -stride and finished stoutly on the outside. TIN DEVIL could not engage the leaders at any time. DARK WATCH was well up in the early part, but tired when placed to punishment. SIR TIME was held safe. ELLACAW was outrun. SUNSHAFT quit badly. SLOW MOTION improved his position on the outside, moved to the pacemaker on the stretch turn, raced into a clear lead nydway of the stretch, then was under a drive to outstay WHITE COCKADE. The latter raced HAPPY KNOT into submission, bore out after being overhauled, but came again nearing the close. C-NOTE was ridden hard and finished gamely while saving ground. ZOSTERA was forced wide and could not reach the leaders. CERISSE III. finished wide with good speed. DRESSY could not stay. INDOMITABLE had no mishaps. HAPPY KNOT quit after a half mile. SWIMALONG, racing kindly, went to the front at once, fenced nicely at all of his fences and was under steady pressure in the last three-quarters to withstand BROADSIDE KING. The latter raced for-vvardly placed, moved up stoutly in the last half mile, made several strong bids and continued tenaciously under punishment in the final issue. BROADSIDE KINGS rider claimed a foul, but it was not allowed. EDGEMONT, saved off the pace, came with good energy when placed to a hard drive. VALPUISEAUX raced into a forward position when shaken up, but tired and bore out during the closing stages. BRIAR BLUE was never dangerous. STEEL DUST was never menaced. SUSPECT was badly outrun. ATOPHAN fell at the eleventh fence while racing in second position. FLYING FEATHERS fell at the sixth obstacle. Scratched 68724 Baffler, 137. The latter, outpaced for a half mile, closed full of run after saving ground on the stretch turn. FINANCE forced a swift pace and continued tenaciously to the close, then pulled up slightly sore. BILLIONAIRE raced well placed and failed to better his position when taken wide in the final five-sixteenths. PERNIE could not reach contention. ROAR raced strongly for the first five-eighths. JOE SCHENCK was never a threat. MOSAWTRE was outrun. GOLD FLAG was squeezed back at the start. COULEEDAM had early speed. TIME SIGNAL raced in dulL fashion. WHITE SAND was kept under light urging in the early running, moved up stoutly on the final curve and finished with good courage. SANDY BOOT, permitted to settle in stride when slow to get going, moved up fast on the final turn and saved much ground when the leaders swung wide. CHASAR fell far out of contention, then closed a big gap. BAIN MARIE raced strongly for seven-eighths, then tired. BEWITCHED raced with the leaders for seven-eighths, then tired. CHALLEDON, shuffled back going to the first turn, secured racing room on the inside after being straightened into the back stretch, raced into a contending position on the final turn, closed stoutly under punishment on the inside of the leaders during the stretch run and came out steadily in the last sixteenth. THIRD DEGREE was rated in front, met tenacious bids from GILDED KNIGHT, but was unable to withstand the winner. GILDED KNIGHT raced lapped with the pacemaker until reaching the stretch, then tired after making stout bids. BIG HURRY was in tight quarters on the first turn, raced to "the outside and continued evenly. IMPOUND raced well placed, but was not good enough when the real test came. BABY TALK, outrun for seven-eighths, began moving forward nearing the final turn, came to the outside of the leaders entering the stretch, displaced BRIERTON and held on tenaciously to outstay OLD JAKE. The latter, a distant trailer the better part of the journey, circled his field and closed with a tremendous rush on the outside. JACK PATCHES followed closest to the pacemaker, came through on the inside of BRIERTON and fought it out determinedly at the finish. BRIERTON opened up a wide lead and was steadied, but could not stay when challenged. ASKARIS failed to reach the leaders. MANRICO was rated well up,, but was not good enough. CRIUS had no excuses.
