TARTARUS COMES RIGHT BACK Xowers Track Record at Shreveport In Headline Handicap. Easy Sailing Fails at Odds-On Best Program of Meeting Staged for Big Crowd. SHREVEPORT, La., Nov. 12. Clipping three-fifths of a second from the track record for a mile and seventy yards, J. H. Taylors Tartarus, under colors for the second time in two days, scored an impressive victory in the Shreveport Handicap, at the Fair Grounds course here this afternoon. With another banner crowd looking on, the four-year-old son of Torchilla ran the distance on the prevailing fast track in 1:46 to wipe from the records the mark held jointly by McGonigle, Indian Salute and Scholar Girl, and the performance put him three lengths in front of his nearest rival at the end. The disappointment of the race was the failure of the odds-on Easy Sailing to finish any better than fourth, second money going to Imperial Jean and third to Dulcimer. . Tartarus, ridden by Lyle Whiting and shouldering 113 pounds, took command at once and, well rated, never was headed. Dulcimer was in hottest pursuit of the pace for about three-quarters and then the lightly regarded Imperial Jean took up the futile chase. The latter could not reach the winner, but ultimately beat Dulcimer two lengths for the place. Easy Sailing, under top impost of 120 pounds was a head farther away. Prince Pad, coupled in. an entry with Merry Freda, was in the thick of the contention for about a half mile, then weakened. Tartarus paid 1 for in the certificates. OUTSTANDING PROGRAM. Todays program was the best of the meeting and the crowd seemed to enjoy immensely the numerous thrilling contests which studded the card. Adding to their pleasure was excellent weather. Skies were somewhat overcast, but otherwise the day was a fine one. Apprentice Page came right back to pilot the winner of the second race, H. and F. Derbys Star Royal. Scoring his second straight victory, Star Royal moved up steadily after being slow to settle, into his best stride and, responding to strong pressure in the drive, was up near the end to win by a length. Chiefs Scout turned in a splendid performance,, but the best he could do was to finish second as Mr. Boss ran third, and the well backed Trace Boy next. The "Daily Double," based on the combined efforts of Hallucinator and Star Royal, paid 30.40 for . Easy Bid, owned by C. Myers and guided by G. Dye, made every pole a winning one in the Centenary Purse, fourth on the card, wwhich saw nine meet at a mile and seventy yards. The Myers performer, a 4 to 1 chance in the wagering, set her own pace under good rating and after shaking off- Devilish Nick,- had enough left to withstand the challenge of Freeplay arid win by a length. The latter was easily best of- the others as he "took the place four lengths before Portfolio; Devilish Nick was fourth and was noticed to have pulled up lame.
