EL PORTAL was forced to take back when he attempted to get through on the inside of the early leaders rounding the far turn, but continued next to the rail to find an opening on the stretch turn and took a good lead, but just lasted to win. ROME; VENNIE came strongly next to the rail after leaving the back stretch, then came to the outside of the winner in the last eighth to. finish fast. RODNEY PAN was badly outrun to the last quarter and was forced to race very wide in the stretch, but was close up at the end and would have won in a few more strides. SAN RAMON was going well at the end. SKY GREY and TONEYS GIRL were used up making the pace and tired. KELCONARD was in close quarters rounding the first turn. The others never figured seriously. PALLIATION, well up from the start, came through on the inside on the stretch turn to open up a good lead and showed the way to the end under mild urging. DON GRAFTON was badly outrun to the stretch, then came fast and might have been closer had his rider exercised more power in the final strides. SPORTING GREEN came steadily through the stretch and was close up at the end. DAILY NEWS had a rather m rough trip, but was going well at the finish. COPA DE ORO was in close quarters a couple of times. RED POWDER lacked early speed and was forced wide by DON GRAFTON. NASEBY, although racing wide, took a good lead in the back stretch, but lost all chance by bearing to the outside fence on the stretch turn. DONNA BONITA and POSILIPO tired. CALCULATOR had good speed from the start and, after racing FOUNTAIN GROVE into-submission, had little trouble withstanding a stretch challenge from PRINCE BOW to win easily. PRINCE BOW, close up on the outside" in the early stages, tired after making a mild bid in the stretch and barely lasted to save second place. RONDELIER closed tround steadily on the inside and was going well at the finish. FOUNTAIN GROVE was used up racing with CALCULATOR and tired in the stretch. EXTRA SPECIAL bore out badly after leaving the back stretch and continued to race very wide to the end. POLVOS PRINCE raced to the front early and, showing fine speed, hugged the rail in the stretch to increase his advantage and, shaken up entering the last sixteenth, was never in danger. SUSI Q. was taken up when in close quarters rounding the far turn, then came to the outside to finish gamely in the middle of the track. POMPEYS SQUAW made up much ground under urging in the last quarter. BOULEVARD could not keep up with the early leaders.- SUN PORTLAND was prominent on the outside in the early j running and raced well to the last eighth, then tired and pulled up lame. MINTOURI, reserved in the early running, permitted BLUE BREEZE and LOVELY BELLS to wear themselves out setting the pace and -came fast on the outside when ready to get to the front in the last sixteenth to win going away in hand. BLUE BREEZE raced on practically even terms with LOVELY BELLS and on the inside, flattering in the early running and, saving ground, outfinished LOVELY BELLS for second place, although tiring. LOVELY BELLS showed good early speed, raced a trifle wide on the stretch turn, but raced well to the last fifty yards, then tired. TEMPERAMENT showed a fairly good effort. MISS LOAN made up ground.
