Seabiscuit El Chico Seabiscuit Seabiscuit Seabiscuit J 1 : - MAN 0 WARS GRANDSON Selected As Outstanding Thoroughbred Racer of Current Year. Stagehand Choice Over Lawrin in Three -Year-Old Division El Chico Tops Juveniles. Seabiscuit, stocky son of Hard Tack and grandson of Man o War, is the champion of Americas equine world in the opinion of Daily Racing Forms handicappers and correspondents. In the annual poll of the staff men of this publication, the Howard star received seventeen of the twenty-five votes cast for best horse of the year, War Admiral received three, El Chico three and Stagehand two. El Chico was voted best of the juvenile colts, and- Inscoelda the star of the young fillies. Stagehand? was adjudged champion -of the three-year-olds, and Jacola best of the three-year-old fillies. In addition to his honors as best of the year, Seabiscuit was voted champion of the handicap division, with Marica just nosing out Esposa by one vote as the champion of the older fillies and mares. SELECTIONS OF EXPERTS. Twenty-five experts forwarded their selections of the best of the various divisions, and among the two-year-olds the unbeaten El Chico received twenty-four of the votes, Four Star being the lone dissenter and favoring Challedon as the top juvenile. Inscoelda was judged best of the juvenile fillies in twenty-one of the ballots, Big Hurry receiving two votes and Dinner Date two. Stagehand received sixteen votes as the star three-year-olds and Lawrin nine. Jacola attracted twenty-four votes as the best three-year-old filly, with R. N. Charlton the sole supporter of Handcuff. Marica and Esposa staged the best race of all for the honor of being considered best among the older fillies and mares. Marica drew thirteen votes to Esposas twelve, yet Esposa has beaten Seabiscuit, arid Marica has not. CONVINCING EVIDENCE. Some sort of a distinction seems to be conferred upon the Seabiscuit-beaters. The champs of the three-year-old brigade Stagehand and Jacola both accomplished that trick, and in the same year. However, Sea-biscuit removed all doubt as to his kingship when he met and defeated War Admiral in the Pimlico Special late in the season. Almost a year of bickering, proposals and counter-proposals took place between owners Charles S. Howard and Samuel D. Riddle before the famous pair finally got together. The result of the Pimlico Special was a stunning surprise to American fans. The decisive victory of Seabiscuit over the odds-. on War Admiral left them gasping because the beautiful seal-brown figured to be almost .as great a champion as his daddy. Sea-: biscuit, however, lived up to the boasts of his owner and trainer, and his triumph removed much of the ill-feeling generated by Howards tactics in demanding a certain distance, so much weight, such and such kind of footing, and other conditions which left fans with the impression he was afraid to match his star with Mr. Riddles horse. Sea-biscuit was a better horse than War Ad- miral at Pimlico on November 1. NEAR SUN BEAUS RECORD. The son of Hard Tack is well on the way toward supplanting Sun Beau as the worlds greatest money-winning horse. That is his goal, according to owner Howard, and, victory in the forthcoming Santa Anita Handicap with its approximate prize of 00,000 would give him a big margin over the Kilmer horse. Prior to his defeat of War Admiral, Sea-: biscuit had won a special race with Ligaroti at Del Mar, the Hollywood Gold Cup, the Bay Meadows Handicap and Agua Caliente Handicap. He was second in the Santa Anita, San Antonio, Stars and Stripes and Laurel Stakes and third in the Manhattan Handicap. His most costly defeat was, of course, in the Santa Anita when Stagehand beat him. STAGEHANDS CREDENTIALS. Stagehand won, in addition to the Santa Anita Handicap, the Empire City Handicap, Santa Anita Derby, Governors Handicap, Narragansett Special and Empire City Handicap. He failed to get to the post in the Kentucky Derby because of illness. He was a big disappointment in the Arlington Classic and was also beaten in the Dwyer and Brooklyn Handicap. Lawrin won five stakes of the major va- riety the Kentucky Derby, Hollywood Invitational Championship, Flamingo Stakes, Holllywood Trial Stakes and Hialeah stakes, equaling Stagehands record in number of victories in big races. However, two of the sixteen experts who picked Stagehand as best of his age also considered him - best 1 horse of the year. Lawrin did not receive a - single vote for that honor. . BRILLIANT WAR ADMIRAL. War Admiral, a brilliant horse, was defeated only twice during the year, once in the Massachusetts Handicap by Menow, and the second time when he finished behind Seabiscuit. He won seven other races, how- over, including the Saratoga Cup, Jockey 1 Club Gold Cup, Rhode Island Handicap, .Whitney Stakes, Saratoga, Queens County j" and Wideher Handicaps, t Jacola, swift daughter of Jacopo, reached Continued on eighteenth page. She went on from that triumph to add the Maryland and Washington Handicaps to her vic tories. She was easily best of her sex in tho three-year-old division. Seven straight victories and no defeats was the remarkable juvenile record of El Chico, son of John P. Grier La Chica, owned by William Ziegler, Jr., whose mare Esposa was rated almost equal with Marica in the older division. El Chico made his debut at Saratoga in August, won the Saratoga Special, and went on from there to score in the United States Hotel, Great American, Dover, Youthful, Junior Champion and Hopeful Stakes. He was not eligible for the Belmont Futurity.
