. ; 1,130 HORSES NOW REGISTERED Abundance of Material Available at the Fair Grounds. Many Yearlings Included in Stables at Cres-cent City 117 Youngsters Registered With Officials. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 26. That there is an abundance and a varied brand 4f racing material available for the Louisiana Jockey Clubs 1938-39 racing season at the Fair Grounds is attested by the fact that there are 1,130 horses registered at the local course, with a few stragglers yet to come after the close of the Maryland racing season at Bowie on Saturday. Of the 1,130 thoroughbreds stabled on the grounds and nearby private barns outside the grounds, there are a total of 117 yearlings; youngsters which will become of racing age on Jan. 1, 1939. Unlike the policy to be pursued at any other winter tracks regarding the staging of races for two-year-olds, the first contest for the youngsters at the Fair Grounds will be offered, on Tuesday, January 3, according to the statement of racing secretary Richard A. Leigh, Sr. DISCUSS JUVENILE RACING. The racing of two-year-olds early in the year was widely discussed at the meeting of the National Association of Racing Commissioners last winter in Florida, and. the California horse board adopted a resolution not to stage contests for juveniles until the month of May. As yet, the Florida Racing Commission has not made an announcement of its plans in this respect. Horsemen who campaign their stables in New Orleans each winter have gone on record as being in favor of racing their young stock as early as January, and the Louisiana Jockey Club intends to adhere to the demands of the owners of two-year-olds and continue to follow the policy that has been prevalent since the revival of racing in the Pelican State back in 1915. All- of the larger outfits registered at the Fair Grounds have a number of yearlings among their horses, with the E. K. Bryson-T. J. Hill combine holding the largest number of youngsters to be "prepped" for racing when the time rolls around for them to make their debuts. REMEMBER BLACK GOLD. One of the outstanding developments of winter racing at the Fair Grounds in the past was the late Black Gold which, after winning his first race here, returned the i following year as a three-year-old to annex the Louisiana Derby, then carry on to three more Derbys, among these the Golden Jubilee running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Several others, although they did not attain the height that Black Gold reached, demonstrated winning ability and proved themselves worthwhile performers. In addition to the 117 yearlings, the registrations revealed that there are 208 two-year-olds, 273 three-year-olds, and 532 four-year-olds and over.
