WOMEN OWNERS AT HIALEAH Twenty-One Fair Sex Listed Among Registration at Florida Track. Mrs. Payne Whitney, Mrs. Isabel Sloanc, Mrs. II. C. Phipps, Mrs. C. S. Bromley Among the Ladies With Large Stables. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 12. One of the highlights of Hialeah Parks colorful winter meeting, January 11 to March 4, will center around the competition to be provided by women owners whose ranks have grown amazingly powerful in recent years. It is interesting to note that twenty-one members of the fair sex are listed among the owners whose silks will vie for honors during Joseph E. Wideners brilliant Miami Jockey Club session this winter a meeting which embraces eleven stakes, headed by the 0,000 added Widener Challenge Cup and the 0,000 added Flamingo. These women owners from all indications will, collectively speaking, more than furnish the material necessary to keep them in the limelight at Hialeah Park. The most prominent are those owned by Mrs. Payne Whitney, who uses the racing name of Greentree Stable ; Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane, patroness of the Brookmeade Stable; Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps, owner of the Wheatley Stable; Mrs. Charles S. Bromley, Mrs. Parker Corning, Mrs. W. Plunket Stewart, owner of Pasteurized, winner of the rich Belmont Stakes, and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs, wife of Hirsch Jacobs, Americas leading trainer for six consecutive years. WELL KNOWN TO PUBLIC. Mrs. Whitney needs no introduction to American racing devotees. Her deep devotion to the sport, both in racing and the breeding phase of it over a number of years, has endeared her to the hearts of turf lovers everywhere. Suffice to say her silks are perhaps the most popular on the American turf. She will have twenty-eight horses in charge of trainer John Gaver, many of them pointing for the rich prizes at Hialeah. Mrs. Sloane is another whose fame on the turf has spread far and wide by virtue of her success as an owner for many years. It is a matter of record that Mrs. Sloane was the first owner of the fair sex to gain the proud distinction of heading the owners list back in 1934, when her thoroughbreds, thanks chiefly to Cavalcade, High Quest and Psychic Bid, amassed gleanings totaling 51,138. Continued on twenty-second page. WOMEN OWNERS AT HIALEAH Continued from first page. Mrs. Sloane also maintains a vast breeding establishment and is one of the heavy buyers of yearlings at Saratoga annually. Her Hia-leah division, which arrived in the care of Elmo Shropshire, is considered as potent as any she has ever campaigned in this famous wintering spot. PLAYS PROMINENT PART. Mrs. Phipps also has played a prominent part in racing in this country for a number of years, and like Mrs. Whitney and Mrs. Sloane is an ardent lover of the thoroughbred. She has campaigned her Wheatley Stable horses at Hialeah Park every winter, and it was here that she saw many of her thoroughbreds develop into great stakes winners. Mrs. Phipps formerly owned Sea-biscuit, which received his baptism at Hialeah Park as a two-year-old. Another of her outstanding winners making his debut at Hialeah was Snark, which set a world record of 1:15 for six and one-half furlongs over the stamping grounds of the Miami Jockey Club on February 9, 1937. Mrs. Phipps has another strong division here presided over by "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons and his chief assistant, George Tappen. Mrs. Jacobs, a consistent winner at Hialeah in the past, is expected to compile another impressive record this winter. Numerically speaking, the New York sportswoman has one of the largest stables on the grounds. Other owners of the fair sex whose horses are quartered at Hialeah Park include Mrs. R. Mcllvain, Mrs. E. B. Carpenter, Mrs. A. W. Abbott, Mrs. Kirby Ramsey, Mrs. B. E. Smith, Mrs. T. Stevenson, Mrs. Nat Ray, Mrs. W. E. Martin, Mrs. Colin MacLeod, Mrs. M. M. Morris, Mrs. B. N. Kane, Mrs. R. H. Shannon, Mrs. L. B. Deming, Miss C. Novabito, Miss Mary Hirsch and Mrs. A. McKinney. For the rich Widener, Mrs. Payne Whitney has named Armor Bearer, Hash, Redbreast and Roll and Toss. Mrs. Phipps candidate is Oversight. Mrs. Parker Corning nominated Thanksgiving and Invader; Mrs. MacLeod, Pernie; Mrs. Ramsey, Mucho Gusto, and Mrs. Stewart, Pasteurized.
