SUBPOENA JAP SHIPPERS WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 12. The Maritime Commission today subponenaed the books, records and correspondence of two of the largest Japanese shipping companies, the Osaka Syosen Kabusiki Kaisya in New York City and Williams Diamond and Company, O. S. K. agents in San Francisco. The subpoenaes were issued by the commission as it began an investigation of a shipping rate war. allegedly precipitated by tljese operators. In Seattle subpoenaes were served upon a third Japanese company, the Yamashita Kisen Kabushiki Kaisha and upon the companys agents Swayne and Hoyt in San Francisco. All of those named in the subpoenaes were summoned to appear at a hearing before the Maritime Commission in Washington on December 21. The commissions investigation is directed primarily into Japanese shipping activities in ocean trade between South America and Pacific coast ports of the United States.
