SICKLE TOPS SIRES OF 1938 Duplicates Success of 1936, but With Larger Total of Money Won -Second Place Still in Doubt. Sickle is the leading sire of 1938, duplicating his success of 1936. With but a few weeks remaining before the end of the current year there is no chance for his two nearest rivals, Pharamond H. and Insco, to wrest the chief honors from him. The get of Sickle has won 106 races and 25,212 in stakes and purses, while Pharamond II. is second with 98 races and 19,683, while Inscb Is a close third with 83 races and 12,779. Sickles total for 1938 is the largest to the credit of any leading sire since Sir Gallahad III. first entered the charmed circle in 1930 with 22,200 won by his progeny. In 1936 the get of Sickle won 09,800 to place their daddys name at the top of American sires. A brown horse foaled in 1924 by Phalaris Selene, by Chaucer, Sickle was bred in England by Lord Derby, imported to the United States in 1929 by Joseph E. Widener, who exercised an option of purchase by paying 25,000 for the horse in 1932. Sickle raced at two and three years in England, being unplaced only once in ten starts. He is standing at Mr. Wideners Elmendorf Farm in Kentucky, where he has made quite a reputation and is immensely popular with breeders. Stagehand was the chief contributor" to Sickles total for 1938, the winner of the Santa Anita Handicap and Santa Anita Derby, being responsible for . 89,710. Cravat was - another large winner with 5,125, while such as Advocator, Blade Edge, Grim Reaper, Mower, Sickle T., Tempestuous, Two Edged and Night Intruder were among others that aided in winning the leadership for their sire. PHARAMOND H. AND INSCO. Second place on the American sire list for 1938 is still in doubt. Pharamond II. has a slight edge over Inscd at the present time, the first-named with 19,683 to his credit, while Inscos offspring have earned 12,779. Menow was the largest winner in the Pharamond H. group, others figuring prominently being Clodion, Creole. Maid, Mythical King, Cross Keys, Bustle, Gerald arid War Magic. Insco owes his success in 1938 to Lawrin, winner of the Kentucky Derby and five other events before an injury incapacitated him for further racing. He was responsible for 33,215. A number of changes may be made in the standing of the remainder of the leading sires, though the list appears complete with probably only a shifting of places to be made among those at the top.
