FLYING BONNY STAKE WINNER Daughter of Flying Heels Accounts for Spreckels Handicap. Fillies Dominate Running: of Tanforan Head-liner, Taking All Places Eight Face Barrier. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Dec. i2. Louis B. Mayer, the Hollywood motion picture tycoon, introduced a fast-running filly to California racing Saturday afternoon when Flying Bonny went postward in the A. B. Spreckels Handicap. The chestnut daughter of Flying Heels won the six furlongs event by three lengths from another crack young miss, Sweet Nancy, from the Norman W. Church barn, while Dear Diary, the only California-bred in the contest, was third and Heelplates finished fourth. Fillies dominated the running in the Spreckels, as the first three to finish were all of the supposedly weaker sex. Flying Bonny took command at once and was never headed. Jockey George Woolf was up, and after giving her free rein leaving the post, took a snug hold of her when she was once safely in command. Woolf was not required to exert much skill as Flying Bonny sped on in front of her opposition and was four lengths to the good after turning for home. She was in hand at the end. Mask and Wig turned in a rather disappointing effort over the dull track. He was second to his stablemate in the early stages, but quit badly in the stretch. Sweet Nancy, while turning in a good effort, must improve greatly if she expects to measure up to the standards of Flying Bonny during the Santa Anita season. She raced well, but never threatened the winner. Dear Diary, which has never been regarded as a first-flight American two-year-old filly although the pick of the California crop, ran a good race. But eight animals, four fillies, two colts and two young geldings, went to the post, and three of them Audacious Lady, Bubbling Boy and Say Judge might just as well have remained in the barn. They were outrun all the way. Two late scratches Flying Dot and Perfect Blend reduced the size of the field, and the winners share of the ,500 added purse was ,145. Flying Bonny ran the six furlongs over a dull track in 1:12. The winner was decorated by Mrs. C. B. Spreckels.
