J , I REVIEW OF MARYLAND SEASON ! Pimlico Enjoys Big Year, Staging War Admiral-Sea-biscuit Match Race, Outstanding Turf Event of 1938 Bowie Forced to Curtail Meeting Increase in Money Distribution The Pimlico Special of November 1, or Seabiscuit versus War Admiral, was the highlight of Marylands 1938 season of racing. Next to that brilliant match race in importance was the forced cancellation of the last section of the Bowie fall meeting -through an unprecedented fall of snow. A daily increase of 00 per day in money distribution over 1937 and a gain of approximately ,200 per day over 1933, certainly indicates progress and steps toward complete economic recovery. Pimlico, as usual, was the leader and showed the way in offering money prizes and staging special events, chiefly the Seabiscuit-War Admiral match after it appeared almost impossible to bring the two horses together. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, subsequently, elected president of the Maryland Jockey Club, but at the time of the match vice-president, was responsible for bringing to the former hilltop track the outstanding major racing attraction of the year. Pimlico distributed 31,670 during its two meetings, totaling twenty-five days. This made a daily average outlay of 517,266.80. The total for the season is a gain of more than 00,000 over 1933, or just about double the sum distributed in that depressive year. Every major Maryland track and some of the smaller ones increased their prize money. Three of the smaller tracks showed minute loss differences. But for the forced cancellation of racing days at Bowie, the gains would have been even more noticeable. The Prince Georges track also had to call off two stakes, the 0,000 added Bryan and OHara Memorial Handicap, and the ,000 added Endurance Handicap. Dauber was the leading money winner for the season, scoring two victories, one of them in the Preakness, and winding up with 2,875 in earnings. He was then the property of William duPonts Foxcatcher Farms stable, lifting that Maryland establishment into first place among the winning owners. The duPont total was 7,560. Chal-ledon, winner of futurities, earned second place with 3,490 in gleanings and also gave W. Li. Brann the same position among the winning owners. Jacola, Big Hurry, Seabiscuit, Pompoon, Aneroid, Menow and War Admiral, raced in Maryland and accounted for big money prizes, all except War Admiral, which the past season did most of his winning in New York instead of the Old Line State as in the previous season. S. Palumbo displayed the best saddle form throughout the season and finished with the most winners, forty-five; while L. Garrett, closest to him, had forty winners. Palumbos percentage of .22 was more than creditable. H. Guy Bedwell has a new lease on life and, saddling thirty-three winners, looked like the trainer who led all others in America for so many years and set a record, while only Hirsch Jacobs is threatening. Pelleteri was second to Bedwell with twenty--six winners.
