COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 10.— The rout of the favorites at Fairmount Park this afternoon furnished some very interesting and highly contested races, long shots scoring over the publics choices. Although form players were unable to select winners in the first four races, the brand of sport offered thrilled the good crowd in attendance. The public cheered the riding performance of jockey Don Scurlock, who booted home the winners of the first two events on the card. They also welcomed enthusiastically the fine ride jockey T. P. Martin put up on Beau Thor to capture the fourth race. Martin brought Beau Thor to the finish a half length in front of Galeco, which, in turn, held the slight margin of a head advantage over Polante Seth at the end. Devilish Nick finished fourth. CLOSE FOUGHT FINISH. The Thomas Speed Camera was called upon to decide the winner of the five and one-half furlongs first event and showed Ouray a scant nose before Idle Worker. The Pelican, the early pacemaker, bore out badly in the final quarter, but held on gamely to garner the minor award of the purse from He Devil. Off Time, favorite for the sprint, made a bold bid for the lead approaching the final furlong, but flattened out in the drive, finishing sixth. Jockey Don Scurlock scored with the second of his two winning mounts in as many races when he piloted Able Abe to victory over Jockana in the second race, at five and a half furlongs. Scurlock, the riding sensation at Fair-mount Park last year, displayed the form that placed him in prominence during the 1938 season. The field was away to a good start, with Jockana reaching the fore and setting the pace soon after the field got away, and with Able Abe in closest pursuit. Scurlock bided his time with the Howell colorbearer and allowed Jockana to maintain her lead until the final three-sixteenths. Calling upon Able Abe, which quickly responded, Scurlock sent the six-year-old son of Witchmount across the finish a half length before Jockana. The latter was some two lengths in front of Dixie Dora at the end.
