HALF-WAY AT DETROIT I Juveniles in Limelight as Second Half of Meeting Begins. Three of Eight Motor City Contests for Two -Year-Olds — Program of Claiming Races. DETROIT. Mich.. June 19.— Detroit hit the i half-way mark of its long summer meeting j this afternoon with the opening of its second week of twilight racing. Real summer weather prevailed for the all-claiming race program and the feature ; race honored James Melton, nationally , known tenor. It was a four and one-half furlongs flash for better grade plater juveniles, ; and C. L. Templetons Baltee, undefeated " j in his three starts here, was the early | favorite. The son of-Balko was called upon . to pack the top impost of 118 pounds, and . I Wise Greenock carried the next highest burden of 116 pounds. Thea Dear, furnished | by A. L. and Mrs. C. H. Ferguson and winner " at Keeneland, made her local debut in the dash, and La Tora and Congetta completed the field. Two-year-olds met at four and one-half f furlongs in the third race and better grade 5 three-year-olds ran six furlongs in the fifth » contest. The five other races attracted lowly - platers, but the sport was interesting. Heavy showers early Sunday morning left t the track in a good condition for training r today, but it was at its best in time for the » late opening. BY NARROW MARGIN. After establishing a big lead during the opening quarter and coming to the final j ; furlong of the six furlongs dash with four r : | lengths to spare, Masked Plane tired rapidly, ! but lasted to take a head decision over f : Verakee in the first race. Avenue S. was g third, three lengths back. Eleven started, * I j with the winner and Avenue S. holding » sway to the stretch, where Verakee. closing • j | fast on the inside, wore down Avenue S. to | j make the finish so close the placing judges called upon the camera to decide it. There was good support for Cheer Star, but she : dropped out of contention soon after the I i start, to be far back throughout. Grand i Reina held third place for a half-mile, where e she began to give away gradually. Raymond made every post a winning one e to win the three-quarters second race and I complete the smallest "Daily Double" pay-off I of the meeting. The 1,006 patrons who Goupled Raymond and Masked Plane received j" .20 each. Fumble reached the finish II slightly more than a length back of the winner and four lengths before Last Hop, the e third horse. Odd Blue was fourth and the others of the field of seven were outrun. | INCLINED TO LOAF. Odd Blue followed in closest pursuit of the e winner for five-sixteenths and when he gave • up the chase Fumble moved into second d place. Raymond was inclined to loaf during S the run for home and despite swerving when n put to strong pressure was good enough to hold Fumble safe. Willie Page, serving his J last day as an apprentice, took Last Hop in n hand when in close quarters at the upper * turn and. although his mount moved up P when clear, he was no match for the leaders. s.
