Slow Track Prevails for Sunset Racing at 1 Cleveland— Favored Lady Arlington Caught Flat-footed. CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 19.— Coming from behind with a terrific burst of speed, r xCli Longs Sir Minton, a stocky bay coit, f swept to a surprise victory here in the open- f ing race at North Randall. He skipped to a t decisive win as seven juveniles followed in v his wake. A fair-sized crowd cheered the two-year- s old as he raced to a clean-cut triumph over t slow track which appeared much to his c liking. Closest in his pursuit at the end of the four and one-half furlongs dash was £ Albert McKnights Lady Arlington, two and t one-half lengths back. Smith G. Baker, Sr.s v. Little Jack was third. a As the sun pushed its way through a sombre sky Sir Minton carried the Long e silks to their first victory. Mr. Long, famous j Ohio saddle horse owner and developer, is r making his debut as a racing owner this s year, with Sir Minton as his most formidable r campaigner. t Entering the gate at odds of more than s -15 to 1, Sir Minton, Ohio-bred son of Mint t Briar — Boost, by Stimulus, was alert when 1 the start was effected, breaking in fourth position. However, it was not until well into , j £ the stretch that he was able to take the lead, f STIRRING BATTLE. As Dr. J. S. McGinnis Try Flight and the s Baker-owned Little Jack waged a stirring | I c battle for the lead in the early stages, Sir j j t Minton could not keep up and dropped back, j j 1 In the stretch, after Try Flight began to tire, I the Ohio-owned colt began to gain on the | I leading Little Jack, racing past him and 1 winning by a good margin. t Lady Arlington, favorite at odds of 9 to 5, t was left at the post at the start. It was not long, however, before she had reached her 1 best stride and was moving toward the lead- t ers at every step. Sixth in the stretch, she i ran gamely to get up to take second place 1 honors. 1 Sir Minton carried jockey Tyrus Meloche to l his tenth victory of the meeting and cov- 1 ered the four and one-half furlongs in :57. The colt also furnished Alan Long, former | Dixiana Farm superintendent and brother of J the colts owner, the first victory of his career as a trainer. Jockey Ty Meloche came right back in the second race to supplement his victory in the first event, winning the "Daily Double." His mounts, Sir Minton in the first and Come by Chance in the second, paid 8.60 in the "Daily Double" win. • !
