Track Is Officially Fast, but Dead From Recent Rains — Off Guard Ridden Out in Fifth Race. BOSTON, Mass., June 19.— E. W. Duffys Chief Onaway, heavily backed favorite, took the lead at will and drove on gamely under Johnny Barba to win the Scollay Square Purse, which featured a sunny afternoon of sport at Suffolk Downs. At the end of the journey he was just half a length clear of Mrs. E. Graham Lewis Bonny Imp, but Barba was not urging his mount too hard back stretch, with Float Away and The Serf was third, a length off the runner up. Pit Terrier finished a distant fourth, four lengths farther back. The mile was run in 1:41, flat. Pit Terrier broke on top in the event, but Float Away took the van as they went around the first turn. There was a warm pace battle as they straightened out on the back stretch, with Float Away and The Serf fighting it out head and head, and Chief Onaway rated a close third. It was obvious, however, that the latter could take the lead at his riders will and Barba elected to take command of the situation as they sped by the three-eighths post. INCREASES ADVANTAGE. Chief Onaway increased his advantage around tire turn for home and was well clear at the head of the stretch, where The Serf showed second and Bonny Imp had moved up third after a slow start. The Serf began to chuck it soon after they went by the eighth post, and Bonny Imp set sail for the leader. Chief Onaway, however, was equal to the challenge, with Barba giving him a couple of lashes at the sixteenth post and hand-riding after that ground was reached. Bonny Imp ran a good, game race and should improve off the effort. The Serf moved up in menacing fashion on the back stretch, appeared to be under restraint while gaining ground, then hung in the final drive. Pit Terrier was fourth until the stretch, where he gained some ground. Peterhof, a paddock tip, showed little or nothing in the race after being shuffled back in the run to the first turn. The track . was officially designated as fast, but was j dead from recent rains. i A ■
