Bonzar Bonzar Triumphs Triumphs in in Kankakee Kankakee Purse; Purse; Zaca Zaca Rosa Rosa Defeats Defeats Vagrancy Vagrancy in in Acorn Acorn Double f o r W . B . Simpson Stab I e As Take Wing Also Proves Best Both Winners Piloted by Pearson Annie Alone Is Second in Main Offering CRETE, 111., May 20. The colors of William B. Simpson, of Chicago, were carried to their first victory of the local season when Bonzar turned back ten other sprinters in a rousing finish which marked the climax of the six-furlohg Kankakee Purse at Lincoln Fields this afternoon. Handled by the western reinsman, Billy Pearson, the Simpson five-year-old charged up between Annie Alone and Yesteryear in the closing strides to capture major honors "after running the three-quarters of a mile on a fast, but slightly dead track in 1:14. In taking second honors, Annie Alone finished only a head in front of Yesteryear, while the fourth horse, Quizzle; was a good distance back. Wild Oats, the favorite, finished far back after racing prominently for a half mile. Bonzar, who was held at odds of 8 to 1, was never a great distance back and when roused, after a half mile, he responded well. He started up between Annie Alone, the pacemaker, and Yesteryear inside the last eighth and then beat them to the wire. At the end he was ready to draw but. Annie Alone made the pace without need of strong urging and held on gamely in the drive, but she jtfst was not good enough Yesteryear also held on fairly well after being a sharp factor from the beginning. In finishing fourth, Quizzle turned in a steady performance. Wild Oats raced well up and on the inside to the home stretch and then wilted away under pressure. Much of the credit for Bpnzars victory must go to jockey Pearson, for a more timid rider might not have directed his mount into the narrow space through which the Simpson gelding was driven to victory. Rewarded in Initial Victory The Simpson-Pearson combination came right back to win the South Holland Purse, a test of a mile and a sixteenth, offered as the sixth event, with Take Wing. This one came from behind and emerged the winner by four and a half lengths, as He Man finished second, and Gallant Play third. Take Wing was reserved well off the leaders to the second turn and then set sail. He moved up rapidly, got to the front a furlong from the wire and then drew out fast for his convincing success. He Man was easily best of the others and finished four lengths in advance of Gallant Play. Rewarded, a juvenile filly racing under the colors of Allen T. Simmons of Akron, graduated out of the maiden ranks in the five-furlong third race, styled the Colleens Purse. A strongly supported favorite, the daughter of Reaping Reward and Lady Argos took the lead nearing the home stretch and held her rivals safe the rest of the way, winning with a length and a half to spare. Harold Beasy handled her. Bolo Sis, also a sharp factor from the beginning, accounted forsecond money, as Rose Bane finished third. Three of the first four winners were outsiders. The Needmore Stables Miss Baker took the six-furlong opener and paid 1.60 for , J. Barretts Courteous won the six-furlong second at 0.60 for and Friedberg and Brights Monks Memo accounted for the fourth, decided at seven furlongs, and returned 4.20 for . W. B. SIMPSON
