s Alsab Works Fast Mile n In Withers Stakes Prep j Speeds Over Route in 1:37; Goes Out 1 Vs Miles in 1 :522s i ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 20. Alsab, I who electrified the turf world last fall when j he galloped a mile in the unheard time for 4 a two-year-old of 1:35 in winning Bel- 1 mont Parks Champagne Stakes, demon- I strated that he is at approximately that ; form again when he worked for Saturdays I j 5,000 mile Withers over the Nassau Coun- ty strip today. 1 Trainer August "Sarge" Swenke, of the Preakness record-breaker, put blinkers and jockey James on Good Goods 00 son for . 1 his Withers final. Breaking at the mile -mark on the huge main course, the meteoric Chicagoan flashed over the eight furlongs in 1:37 and galloped out an extra t eighth as a sort of reflex action, to complete . the mile and a furlong in 1:52. It 1 was the most impressive performance of f the spring season hereabouts during training . hours and clinched Alsab the place of f post favorite for the Withers. Clockers caught the unprepossessing bay a first quarter in :22, three furlongs in :34, a half in :46, five furlongs in :59, six furlongs in 1:11, seven-eighths in 1:24, the mile in 1:37, and up in 1:52. "I dont know if he will equal his Champagne time in the Withers," Swenke observed I as his charge "cooled out." But he was never better than at present." Alsabs move didnt exactly strike terror into the camps of other Withers eligibles, but served notice that any who oppose him Saturday had better "come a-running," for, while Swenke obviously wanted Alsab to work fast or he wouldnt have adjusted the blinkers on the hard-hitting bay, his Continued on Page Three ; ; Alsab i Works Mile in 7:37 4-5 In Prep for Withers Stakes Preakness Victor Goes Out Mile and Eighth in 1 :52 2-5 To Swenkes Pleasure Conti7iued from Page One charge went through the move well within himself throughout. The Sabath colts move was the only one of any consequence by a Withers candidate during the morning. Under the conditions of the week-end headliner, which is named for David Dunham Withers, a founding father of racing in America as we now know it, each of the entrants will take up 126 pounds, with the exception of any maidens started, who would receive a five-pound allowance. There are no maiden possibilities in sight. Indications in the middle of the week were that the Withers field will come from among Alsab, Ben Whitakers Requested, Calumets Sun Again and Wishbone, Greentrees Devil Diver, R. S. McLaughlins Fairaris, Mrs. Ralph Mcllvains Bright Willie, Foxcatchers Star Beacon, Circle Ms Sir War, W. M. Jeffords Seamanlike, Milky Ways Dogpatch, Mill River Stables Fair Call, Mrs. E. Mulrenans First Fiddle, and possibly J. M. Roeblings Lochinvar. Requested is the most favorably known of Alsabs rivals by virtue of conquests in the Flamingo and Wood Memorial and a dead heat for the place with Sun Again in the more recent Preakness. The Texan was "Alsabs shadow" in their juvenile encounters and, while he led the Chicagoan in the Flamingo, was humbled by him again in the "Run for the Blackeyed Susans." v Sun Again Short in Preakness Sun Again, in the opinions of Ben Jones and Wendell Eads, was a trifle short in the Preakness. They count on the 1941 Arlington Futurity winner improving off that effort in the Withers. Devil Diver qualified when beating Dog-patch inches in a dramatic stretch duel yesterday at Belmont one in which the Greentree colt might have won off had he forced Dogpatch more closely early. Fairaris earned a small but noisy following when he breezed to older sprinters in an impressive seasons debut. However, his latest trial was nothing to develop any remarkable confidence in his stamina, for some railbirds thought him a trifle weary as he completed a mile and an eighth in 1:54 after going a mile in 1:40.- Star Beacon, completely unknown to racegoers as recently as Preakness day,1 emerged as a "dark" horse in two Belmont ; Park chances, the last of which found him graduating handsomely at the expense of some slow horses. Bright Willie won the Swift, but now finds himself in the position of having to prove he holds sufficient class, though he beat the feeble edition of Alsab, who performed in Florida last winter. Attractive Fiejd for Juvenile The Withers would seem sufficiently attractive to stand alone on any bill of turf fare, especially a Saturday card, but it isnt quite "the whole show." It has an exceptionally interesting renewal of the Juvenile as a companion feature. This affair also will attract a topheavy field, with Mrs. J. S. Letelliers New Orleans-owned Jack S. L. shaping up as the probable public preference, after making shambles of a field of platers while masquerading as a ,000 horse back at Jamaica, then raising a dust storm in front of The Jockey Club Plate field at Belmont. Greentree will test Jack S. L. with Devil Divers slick-striding half-brother, Hickory Head, who toyed with the field that encountered him in his lone start at Belmont. Jock Whitneys Four Freedoms won some friends in life-and-death struggles at Ja-, maica, who will have sentimental wagers on this relative of the ill-fated Phar Lap. ! Those are "the big three" of prospective : starters. Others who may appear are Bel- airs Bossuet, W. E. Boeings Corona Co-: rona, Christianas Quillon, Coldstreams Bullpen, Foxcatcher Farms Suncap, one I of the first of Rosemonts issue; Howe Sta-- bles True North, Mrs. L. Lazares Joe r Burger, Nydrie Stables Driven Snow, C. V. I Whitneys Dove Shoot and Bill Zieglers ; Breezing Home. 1 !
