1 Fencers Hold Spotlight At Belmont Park Today Eleven Young Prospects to Meet In Spring Maiden Steeplechase ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 20. The Belmont Spring Maiden Steeplechase, a fixture more distinguished as a colorful spectacle than for any proven quality on the part of its participants, will be the main piece de resistance of the Nassau County park this afternoon. This ,000 added special of about two miles and a dozen hedges has drawn a promised field of 11 more or less talented young steeplechase prospects. It will be quite a scramble, one imagines, with the hunt and chase addicts who have sufficiently recuperated "from their Bath" in the Appleton, expected to install OKelly as the "tote" favorite. Pete Bost-wicks Merchantman also will be liberally supported, on the strength of a couple of conquests through the field in the Aiken, S. C, area. An interesting entrant in this fixture is I Iron Shot, who was a moderately successful stayer on the flat and today represents Miss Ella Widener, Pete Wideners daughter. Iron Shot is the first to carry that young ladys colors. He runs coupled with i Brooks Parkers Cortesano. There are two additional couplings in the stake. Bayard Sharp has named Knights Quest and Sea Fever, while St. Patricks Day and Dedham will represent R. K. Mellon and Mrs. E. duPont Weir, j The Spring Maiden is an unique race, j It consists of a series of three such hedge I affairs, the first being run at Pimlico. This is the second of the sequence and the final running comes at Delaware Parks summer session. Under the conditions, owners subscribe 50 0 per race which entitles them to name an eligible for each of the three races. The weights are according to the entrants varying ages and accomplishments, if any. Only maidens at time of closing, last March 20, are eligible. The Spring Maidens chief function is to foster the development of more young fencers. Usually, it develops contests that j are replete with thrills and excitement. Supporting the Spring Maiden are seven flat events, including a ,500 added class "C" handicap of a mile, and a sixteenth, identified as the King Eric. This race attracted eight fairish distance horses. Sir War, a Withers candidate, is the top weight under 122 and opposes the steady Air Current, who carries 118.
