Signator Woolford Main Hope in Crete Seen in Breezing, Six-Furlong Move Covers Distance in 1:16 Stablemates, Technician, Pig Tails, Also Eligible CRETE, 111., May 20. The Woolfort Farm stable of Herbert M. Woolf may hav; a powerful hand to play in Saturdays run ning of the ,000 Crete Handicap a Lincoln Fields. This Kansas racing estab lishment has three-nominees for the six furlong feature in Signator, Techniciai and the three-year-old filly Pig Tails, an its main reliance may be Signator. The son of Insco and Green Leaf breezed six furlongs this morning in 1:16. Tha work was hardly impressive from a time " standpoint, but he accomplished it with ease, and it further encouraged his conhec-tions to believe he will be a prominent force in handicap division in Chicago this year. The Woolford establishment had high aims for this horse" last year when he wat a three-year-old, but he only got to ths post twice, finishing second in one engagement and winning the others. He then sustained an injury that kept him out ol competition the rest of the year. He suffered this mishap in February. Ran second to Mioland Last winter he was taken to Florida, and here he responded well to training to such an extent, in fact, that he was able to place in several stakes. He ran second to "Mioland in the Coral Gables Handicap and was third to The Chief and Llanero in the Ponce De Leon Handicap. During the winter he also won two races and earned a share of the purses in several other events. After his race in the Ponce De Leon he did not do so well and was not campaigned through the Churchill Downs meeting, but he may again be near his best now and, if so, should be a sharp contender for honors in the Crete Handicap. Signator has both speed and staying qualities that should stand him in good stead this season. He was assigned only 106 pounds for Saturdays test and that weight should not rest too heavily upon him. If Signator starts Saturday, he may be accompanied postward by Technician or Pig Tails. In either event Woolford will be strongly represented in the Crete, in which Technician finished third two years ago. Besides Signator, two other Crete Handicap nominees were seen in beneficial private trials this morning. Defense, a California horse owned by Norman W. Church, rattled off five furlongs handily in 1:00, and Mrs. G. B. Scallons Crossbow n who won the stakes in 1938 under the colors of the Calumet Farm, stepped a handy three-quarters of a mile in 1:14. Thirty-one horses, three years old and older, are eligible for the Crete Handicap and as many as 12 may be listed as actual starters.
