Maechance Driving Winner at Suffolk Downs Favored Watch Over Under Weil-Judged Ride by Howell Mixer Victorious BOSTON, Mass., May 20. Phil Biebers Maechance, a five-year-old son of Chance Shot and Martinique, who moved up on an "off" track, qualified for his engagement in Saturdays running of the ,000 added Paul Revere Handicap by driving to victory in the Point of Pines Purse, six-furlong allowance event, for older horses which featured todays card at Suffolk Downs. Robert "Red" Howell rated the Bieber representative along perfectly while making a winner of him a length and a half before Watch Over, the favorite, over a drying out racing strip which was classified as good for this race. Fourth choice in the wagering, Maechance returned 0.20 to those who backed him as he accounted for his second victory of the year. The board registered 1:12 for his six-furlong effort, good time over the oval. A neck back off Watch Over, Mrs. J. Yancey Christmas Rough Time tired to finish third three lengths before J. H. Miles Itabo. That son of Bold Venture made a run at the leaders on the turn, but faltered in front of the stand and was not abused. The latter and Sir Blenheim, who finished last, are also eligible for the Paul Revere. While Aureole broke out of the gate before Rough Time, Dabson sent that Grand Time gelding into the lead before they had gone three strides away from the barrier, and he was not headed again until Watch Over got in front temporarily at the eighth pole while racing on the rail. Howell Bides Time Going down the back stretch, Maechance was tucked in among hwses and Howell waited until the three-furlong pole before taking his mount out of trouble. At the head of the stretch the Bieber representative moved between Itabo and Aureole and made a run at the leader. He overpowered him midway of the stretch and earned his length and a half advantage in the final panel. The Gloucester Purse, six furlongs, for ,000 to ,000 three-year-olds, one of the better offerings on the card, went to S. W. Shapoff s Mixer. The Canaan gelding was accounting for this third victory of the year as he accomplished his score a length and a half in advance of Mrs. K. Smarts Pacification. D. J. Sullivans Airspring, the favorite, picked up show money before Alexander S. Pierces Ended. The winner was time in 1:13 and paid .80 in the mutuels. The race was a ding-dong affair early with Natomas, Pacification arid Airspring fighting it out for command, but down in front of the stand Mixer emerged from the pack to annex victory. Don Brunelle scored a riding double when he won the third race on Mrs. H. H. Charles Peanut Lady and then came right back to win the fourth on Happy Stutts High Martin. In the latter event, the Pawtucket apprentice sent the High Fall gelding to the front almost at the start and he was never headed, as he earned his score a half a length before Mrs. Ed Haughtons Nopalosa Rojo, completing the mile and a sixteenth in 1:48. High Martin paid 0.40 in the mutuels.
