Bonzar Bonzar Triumphs Triumphs in in Kankakee Kankakee Purse; Purse; Zaca Zaca Rosa Rosa Defeats Defeats Vagrancy Vagrancy in in Acorn Acorn West Coast Filly Driven Out Hard Stretch Charge of Belair Miss Nearly Makes Grade In Belmont Park Fixture . ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 20. Zaca Rosa, who hails from sunny California, whence have come many superlative race mares since the days of Mollie McCarthy, lasted in a furious drive to add her name to the roster of Acorn heroines this afternoon at Belmont Park. W. W. Crenshaws standardbearer had fashioned practically all the pace in this important one mile turf annal for three-year-olds of her sex and was rapidly running out of speed as she reached the final marker in 1:38, with a diminishing length and a half to spare over William Woodwards favored Vagrancy, who was obviously best as the race was run. A neck behind the giantess from Belair was another westerner, A. A. Baronis Bonnet Ann, who was leg-weary after following the winners pace closely all the way. Red Rosette was a desultory fourth in a field of fifteen of the best of the division which could be mustered. It was keenly disappointing to a host of her backers to see Vagrancy beaten in a contest in which she was the only member of the field still running through the final yards. But Zaca Rosa drew considerable support herself and returned 0.40, adding 1,300 to her earlier balance. The time was just fair, after a first six furlongs in 1:11, Zaca Rosas 1:38 being a full second and a fifth behind Damaged Goods stake mark. Many Noted Turf Patrons See Stakes A crowd of 15,547 witnessed the Acorn, -as against 14,433 for the same afternoon last spring. In the gathering were many noted turf patrons out to see the Acorn fillies perform, including Jockey Club Chairman William Woodward, Willie du Pont, Sam Riddle, Leslie Keiffer and Harry Parr III. The Acorn field included some young mares, incidentally, who hardly "belonged," in fact, being so lacking in natural confidence as to have to be accompanied by lead ponies. Zaca Rosa had the speed of the Acorn lot, breaking from the extreme outside and angling to the rail in the run to the first turn to open up daylight after shaking off Light Lady, Copperette and Bonnet Ann. She opened up three lengths on the bend and then was "dying" all the last furlong. The pole just saved her. Vagrancyr in whom her connections vested no remarkable confidence at the distance, opining she be better suited by the Oaks route, put up a corking race. She drew number one and was tip-toed more than she likes to work "her way forward while escaping trouble on the inside going Continued on Page Thirty -Five s n j i I j 4 1 I ; I j 1 . 1 t . 1 f . f Zaca Rosa Takes Acorn In Drive Over Vagrancy Belair Fillys Charge Nearly Makes Grade at Belmont Park Continued from Page One to the far turn. Malley made much use of her to draw a bead on the winner entering the stretch and all through that lane Vagrancy gained, but not quite swiftly enough. Bonnet Ann had excuses, weakening after being in closest pursuit of the winner to the stretch. Chiquita Mia also was inexcusably trailing, for she inaugurated her move with Vagrancy on the bend and was beaten off. Light Lady,, a "fielder," had dead aim to the stretch, moving along just off Bonnet Ann, then flattening out. There came a double for the Warren Wright silks when Col. Teddy was an easy winner over the three-year-olds that met in the seven furlongs of the Contestor Purse. Wendell Eads, the stable jockey, who had ridden Bay Carse to his score, rode a supremely confident race on the son of Sun Teddy and, sending him up after the pacemaking Song o War while under a steadying restraint, he shook that lad off at the head of the stretch to draw out easily and be in hand at the end while winning by two lengths. Flaught finished with good courage to take the place after having followed fairly close to the pace and Spare Man was along in time to take third from the third Song 0 War. Col. Teddy is an eligible for the Withers, to be run Saturday, and he has proven his fitness and entire eligibility for that important prize should Ben Jones decide to send him to the post. After the finish of this, Flaught was worked out the full mile in 1:39, which was a nice trial for his Withers engagement. Bay Carse in Tight Fit One of the closest finishes of the day came out of the fourth, a dash of six furlongs under claiming conditions, that brought out a fast band of the ,000 variety. In a battling finish, Warren Wrights Bay Carse charged up on the outside to be the winner over Afghanistan and Skin Deep, who finished in a dead heat for the place, with Speed to Spare, a close fourth. ; As was expected, Speed to Spare was the one to cut out the pace and he was closely attended by Skin Deep, with Af- ghanistan going along under a slight restraint back of them, while Bay Carse, after breaking well, was outrun early. Skin Deep had headed Speed to Spare when the stretch was reached and he was holding Afghanistan safe until right at the end, : where Bay Carse made his winning dash on the outside, and Afghanistan came 1 again to gain a dead heat for the place. 1 Five shifty handicap horses, including " the Suburban eligibles, Bolingbroke and 1 Swing and Sway, went to the post in the " mile and a furlong of the Ben Brush, and 1 when the dust had settled it was Myron t Selznicks veteran Cant Wait by a neck before Tola Rose and Bolingbroke third, a length away. This was a fast race, with the teletimer showing a mile in 1:36 and the full rcute in 1:49, just three-fifths behind Hot . Toddys old track record, g Cant Wait, well ridden by James, broke e in front, but Garza brashly sent Tola Rose if to him and James indulged the latter in is a slight lead to the stretch. From the top 0 of the lane home, both were under hard ;- driving near the end. Cant Waits class asserted itself. Bolingbroke was lengths out of it to the stretch, then finished fast for third. Arcaro was rating Swing and Sway to the stretch; then, when he wanted his horse to run, Swing and Sway faltered.
