Tennessee Breeding NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 20. John Greener had a thrill recently. As one of his colorbearers came out of the Churchill Downs paddock, Greener overheard an old-time trainer comment, "I know those colors. Theyre the same ones Olambala carried 25 years ago." In those days Greeners father was one of the leading breeders and owners of Tennessee, racing such homebreds as Olambala, Countless, Oiseau and Cosmic. The younger Greener, upon entering the sport several years ago, claimed the colors of his father. There is no thoroughbred racing in Tennessee, but there is plenty of thoroughbred breeding, Within the last five years sev eral nurseries have been established hi the blue grass section of the state around Nashville, and annually the number of breeders increases. One of the best yearlings in Tennessee is at Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farms. He is a brown colt, by Reaping Reward Forever Yours. Sire and dam were noted racers under Mrs. Mars colors, Reaping Reward winning the New England Futurity and Latonia Derby, and Forever Yours scoring in the Spinaway and Arlington Lassie Stakes. Foaled at Almahurst Farm, near Lexington, the colt was transferred to Milky Way Farms after being wearied last fall. The more prominent breeders here are Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, Mrs. Laura Branham, Miss Mildred Woolwine, Del Holeman, Ed Potter, John Greener, Jimmy Tupper, C. LeRoy King and Granger Williams. Granger Williams, a recent recruit, breeds thoroughbreds at his 75-acre Long Branch stud, near here. The only stallion in service is Chancing stake winner of 20 races, whom Williams has leased. Williams is a converted walking horse breeder. He sold for ,500 to Gene Autry the flashy stallion, Champion Jr., as a personal mount for movie work. Almost every horse breeder here rides horseback daily. Riding is as much a part of the daily routine as eating. As there is a scarcity of top stallions in the state, almost all the outstanding mares are sent to Kentucky to outstanding sires. After the mating season, the matrons are returned here. The most prominent sire here is Man ONight, sire of-Shine ONight," Nightland, Night Lady and Connaught. The son of Manna is owned by Mrs. Laura Branham.
