California Breeding Notes LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 20. Although Neil McCarthy has owned a great many mares, he states that Rhapsody, an eleven-year-old daughter of Pennant Sky Light, by Chicle, is one of his all-time favorites. Rhapsody was the first mare to foal at the McCarthy Ranch this season. She is the dam of the stake winner Morning Breeze. Incidentally, Morning Breeze lost twin foals by Sierra Nevada this year. The mare Marynell, popular runner on California tracks a few seasons ago, dropped a chestnut filly by Top Row at John A. Sattlers ranch. Pretteia, another former California runner, foaled a bay colt by Ever Bubbling. Dr. O. Hartnagle, who has charge of the Sattler ranch, which is high on Californias Ridge Route, reports that snow fell at the ranch late in April. Faithful Maud, Caliente favorite a few seasons ago, recently dropped her first foal. The youngster, a colt by the Wrack stallion, Whee, was born at La Sierra Ranch, Corona, Calif. Faithful Maud is owned by J. O. Long. She and her foal are at the Riverside track. Wilton Woods reports the arrival of two colts and one filly by Bargello at his ranch. The colts are out of Glint o Gold, by Colonel Vennie, and Rollfetch, by Rolls Royce. The filly is out of Snooksie Shot, by Sunshot. Charlie Brown, who has been doing some breeding at his San Ysidro place in recent years, is now in charge of the Gillespie Brothers ranch near Gila Bend, Arizona. The imported sire Moonlight Run and fifteen of Neil McCarthys mares were recently shipped there. Meanwhile, Browns brother has charge of the California ranch, where stands the stallion Bee Line. Foals at the Val Verde Ranch of A. V. Gomez, near Loomis, are a colt by Lon Mike Westy, a colt by Bachelors Gift Battling Kitty, a filly by Shoot Foot Broadway Rage and a filly by Shoot Foot Good Weather. The latter three mares were bred to Sports Writer, while Westie was bred to Bachelors Gift. Naishapur, owned by John B. McKee and now standing at Deerwood Stock Farm, is booked to about fifteen mares this season. He has already been mated with four. This i is Naishapurs first season in Higden Valley. He stood in San Diego County last year. One of the first of the get ofMoral Victory is in training for the two-year-old races at Caliente. He is Little Vic, named for the son of J. M. Burns at whose ranch in Northern California Moral Victory now stands. Burns has three other two-year-olds at Caliente in charge of George Glick. Bon Moon, who was prominent in distance races on the California turf a few years ago, is being used for breeding saddle horses by his owner, Carl Beal. Rustic Lassie and Mildred Jim, mares owned by Walton Day, foaled at Iron Mountain Ranch. Mildred Jim, a Sir Barton mare, had a filly by Justice F. and Rustic Lassie, a Greenock mare, also had a filly by the same sire. Rustic Lassie was bred back to Iron Hills and Mildred Jim to Justice F. The former handicap horse Gosum, who failed as a sire and was later unsexed, is still among the horses at Carleton Burkes Greenfield Farm. Burke recommended Gosum to the late Nelson Howard and the horse more than paid his way while racing under the Howard silks. The Black Servant mare, Black Mammy, well known on the California turf, recently foaled a colt by By Pass II. at Mrs. W. P. Roths Why Worry Farm, near Palo Alto. The one-time speed sensation Nevada Queen has a two-year-old filly named Ridgewood Nymph in training at Caliente. The youngster is by Gallant Sir. Nevada Queen was bred toMio dArezzo last year. The latest foal to arrive at Deerwood Stock Farm is a filly by Naishapur out of Oblivious. A foal by By Pass II. Sunzena,, the last to arrive at the ranch this season, is clue this week.
