I j I j | j j Lord Lonsdale, Ail-Around English Sportsman, Dies By Special Correspondent LONDON. Eng., April 13.— Lord Lonsdale. 87, a sporting peer who once licked John L. Sullivan, died today at Oakham, Rutlandshire. A member of one of Eng-! lands oldest families, he was born Hugh Cecil Lowther on January 25. 1857, and became the fifth Earl of Lonsdale on the death of his brother in 1882. The Earldom now passes to his. brother. Capt. Lancelot Edward Lowther, 76. Lonsdale occupied a leading position in Englands social and sporting life for more than a half-century and was described by many observers as the greatest all-round sportsman British aristocracy has ever produced. His chief loves were horses, dogs and boxing. His racing stables were well known, although they achieved little success until 1922, when his Royal Lancet* won the St. Leger.
