April 13.— An in-| crease in purses for the spring meeting at Wheeling Downs was announced here today by general manager Edward J. Bren-j nan. Minimum offerings for the meeting, which opens May 25 and continues through July 4. will be 00. with features each day at increased sums. Purse distribution for the spring racing will total over 23,000. said Brennan. with added awards for grooms and others. Ac-i cording to the recently issued report of the West Virginia Racing Commission, the purse total of both 1943 meetings at Wheeling was 80,000. Racing secretary William M. Shewbridge has stated that the Wheeling barns will be ready for occupancy May 1. and stables allotted space are permitted to ship into Wheeling after that date. Ground crews already are working at the island oval m preparation for the spring session, and by opening day the popular "Little Saratoga5 should be in spic and span shape.
