Y., April 13.— The McNulty brothers, George and Charles, are two owners comparatively new to racing who have been innoculated with a substantial dose of the turf virus. Operators of one of the biggest ship yards on the eastern seaboard, they have a small string under the care of trainer Bert Pomeroy. After the war they are expected to add considerably to their thoroughbred holdings. The McNulty brothers have registered individual colors for life, and there is a friendly rivalry between them. Georges best prospect appears to be a maiden two- year-old filly. Head Smart, by Head Play, from the useful Six Sixty. This lass was his first horse and finished a series of quarter-mile races at New Orleans as though she might go places given a bit more distance. Charles McNulty s best bet is the colt Wise Step, whom he has named for the Kentucky Derby. Pomeroy cannot eye to eye with owner McNulty on this ambitious project. But when the G. D. Widener cast-off whipped Blue Serve in a recent workout, that Derby trip became a more imminent possibility. Wise Step won his last start at New Orleans, but carried a ,500 claiming tag and surprised the patrons to the extent of a 1.80 payoff. Still McNulty says, "a 100 to 1 shot did win it once. We ought to try."
