Jack Randall, a comparative newcomer to the owners ranks, has three horses here under the supervision of trainer M. Davis. Extra Mileage, Sickle Bar and Randal J. compose the trio. Pete Uzelac is one of the few experienced apprentice riders at Ak-Sar-Ben this sea- son. Uzelac rode with considerable success the latter portion of the Phoenix Sportsmans Park meeting and is galloping horses daily for trainer Jack Carrell, who has a stable of 22 horses here. R. E. Stewart, who will act as the apprentices agent, reports that Uzelac can do 100 pounds. Nebraska owner and trainer Wilbur Brown, has returned to race his horces here. Always successful during this meeting in the past, Brown has a half dozen racers to represent him this season. A. L. Colby is the owner of perhaps the best three-year-old at Ak-Sar-Ben, the Hard Tack gelding Whichtack. Trainer R. J. House brought the good racer from Chicago with three other horses for Colby, Miss Mary Jo, Gala Grip, and Chicona. House also conditions Valtite for his own interest. L. R. Owen once again has charge of the Lakeview Stock Farm string of horses which will campaign here. Eight of the nine head in training are by their own sire, Titus. George Tilden and his wife recently arrived from Des Moines, Iowa, where they attended the burial of Tildens mother, Mrs. L. J. Tilden. Mrs. Tilden had a fatal heart attack while her son was visiting her en route from Chicago to Ak-Sar-Ben, where he is handling jockey William Baileys en-J gagements. George Tildens son, trainer Robert Tilden, was unable to obtain trans- portation from California to attend the funeral last Friday. Former jockey Ray Conners has now joined the owners ranks, having purchased during the winter months the consistent mare Madam High from Floyd Shultz. The training duties have been retained by Shultz. Fritz Weidaman is the latest addition to the local jockey colony, arriving with his agent, George "Yum Yum" Dominic. Weidaman, who is a home-town boy, expects to ride free lance throughout the meeting. Frank Eblen inspected the extensive string of horses he has here in care of trainer George Houston, and is staying through the first week of racing at Ak-Sar-Ben before returning to his contracting business and his farm at Atlantic, Iowa. Jockeys R. W. Black and C. L. Kirby are arrivals from Phoenix, Ariz., where they last successfully applied their talents. The veteran agent Al "Cracker" Piem will han- die both riders engagements. Frank Pickering is a visiting friend of owner-trainer Willard Beezley from the lat-2 ters home town of Nebraska City. Racing secretary Richard A. Leigh an- nounced this morning that a total of 815 horses have been entered in the registra tion book. Of this number, 88 are twe year-olds, 122 three-year-olds, and 605 four years or older. Out of approximately 300 horses that have paraded postward since the beginning of the meeting last Tuesday the stewards have not found it necessary to place any of the starters on their list or upon the schooling list. Jockey William Lowe had his first mount of the meeting Friday, upon R. Jarmins Create in the third race. Lowe, who recently arrived from Chicago, finished second on R. Jarmins colorbearer. Evidence of the fast drying qualities possessed by the Ak-Sar-Ben racing strip, was displayed Friday when the official tabulation of the track condition changed from heavy for first two races, to slow through the sixth race, and then moved up to good for the last two events. A total of eight horses have changed hands via the claiming box the first four racing days. Friday two claims were registered, Walton Lewis taking Alpledg for ,000, and the Arlington Stable haltering Valdina Sun for the sum of ,200. Jockey t,ack McClain excused himself from his riding engagements Saturday, when he injured a finger while awaiting his first mount in the jockeys room. McClain was to ride two horses.
