A field of sixteen, each horse carrying 126 pounds, was scheduled to go to the post for the one mile and a half race which is the most coveted prize of the British turf. A crowd of 200,000 was expected to jam the famed race track. The overnight line installed the Aga Khans Khaled as third choice at 13-2, with Tom Lilleys Radiotherapy, 8-1; Lord Astors Fast and Fair, 9-1; Mrs. MacDon-ald Buchanans Edward Tudor, 100-8; Miss Pat Bullocks Neapolitan, 100-7; Lord Durhams White Jacket, 20-1; Sir Richard Brookes Peterborough, 22-1; the Duke of Norfolks Royal Commission, 50-1, and J. When the Guineas was held at Newmarket, Sir Wil-3 liam failed to sign the letter requesting the horses withdrawal. He was the most surprised man on Newmarket Heath, when he saw Happy Knight speed past the finish line in front. Gulf Stream finished fourth in the Guineas. Khaled was second, four and a half lengths behind the winner, while Radio-e therapy was fourth. An old saying in Brit-n ish circles, "Reverse the placing in the Two Thousand Guineas and you have the win-l- ner of the Derby," shortened the odds on Khaled. The traditional glamor which was attendant on the Derby before the War is expected to return with the green Surrey Downs echoing with the noise of bookmak- ers shouting their odds, the shrill sirens of merry-go-rounds in the midst of gypsy caravans and the cries of vendors at the various food stalls. During the war years a substitute event was run at Newmarket, headquarters of Britains bloodstock industry, but it lacked the color of the Epsom Derby, which is to British racing what the Kentucky Derby is to the American turf.
