Race Classifications in Past Performances Every type of race in which horses compete is clearly indicated in Daily Racing Forms past performances, eliminating all possibility of confusion in determining the quality of the starters. The various classes of races are denoted by the following simple abbreviations: Mdn — Maidens. AlwM — Maiden allowance. I Alw — Allowance. AlwA — Graded allowance. Class A. AlwS — Allowance stake. HcpO — Overnight handicap. HcpA — Graded handicap, Class A. HcpS — Handicap stake. Wfa — Weight-for-age. WfaS — Weight-for-age stake. ScwS — Scale weight stake Comb— Combination. SplW— Special weight Mtch — Match race. Ail claiming races, purse, stake, handicap, etc., and whether flat, steeplechase or hurdle, denoted by the price following jockeys name. In combination races, the claiming price is given if the horse is entered to be claimed; if not liable to claim the term "Comb" is used. Graded handicaps are for horses arbitrarily rated in groups or classes, A, B, C, etc., by the track handicapper or racing secretary, according to his estimates of their ability. As the quality of horses varies at different tracks, there must be a I difference in their ratings. For example, a Class A horse at one track might be . rated in Class B at another. This also applies to graded allowance events. Some of the above designations are used for steeplechase and hurdle races.
