Take Away Courageous Suffolk Downs Winner Stays With Early Pace, Then Is Able to Withstand Momo Flag SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 4. — Having enough speed to stay up with the pace, and then having enough in reserve to stand off the challenge of the favorite, E. A. Simpsons Take Away won the Columbia Purse, sixth and feature race of the Suffolk Downs program before 16,510 enthusiasts this dreary afternoon. Apprentice Joey Licausi, who was scoring his second victory of the day, hustled Take Away right up there at the break in this event of a mile and a sixteenth, moved up alongside the early-speedster Another Bel and, at the half-mile pole, took over the lead. In the meantime, Lamoureux and Peats Momo Flag, the public choice, began his usual late charge and although he drew almost even at the sixteenth pole, could not reach the finish wire ahead of the second choice. In third place was R. H. Schwartz Singular. The triumph of Take Away, whose only question was whether the six-year-old son of Aneroid was able to go the route, marked the fourth in the first six races for the second choices. The only favorite was the first winner, Burgoo Lady, also ridden by Licausi. The second choices that came home were First Command in the second race, Fore and At in the fourth and Respire in the fifth. Fore and Aft, owned by Weston Adams, was really a fit colt as he won the six-furlong sprint in 1:12 without any trouble at all. The Flint Shot colt showed that he must be considered a contender for that 5,000 Yankee Handicap, the three-year-old stake on Saturday. He broke out of the gate nicely and won eased up. Whether he can go the distance is another matter, but the Boston-owned colt figures to be in the running the early part of the event.
