War War Miss Miss and and Doras Doras Son Son Triumphant; Triumphant; But But Why Why Not Not Acorn Acorn Stakes Stakes Victress Victress Register in Split Requested Purse Former Prevails by Head In Hawthorne Dash; Latter Turns Back Sly Tigress HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 13.— Finding the muddy footing to her liking and her 10 opponents within the limitations of her best effort, War Miss, racing for the partnership of Rorick and Lane was a front-running but driving winner of the first division of the Requested Purse twin features at this point. At the end the winning daughter of War Glory was under stout pressure from jockey William Seger to retain a head margin over B. M. Smiths fast-finishing Cooling Spring, as the favored Lightfoot Lady, from the stable of Willard T. Beezley, was compelled to accept third honors, slightly less than one length farther back. The score of War Miss was the second saddle success of the afternoon for Seger who had piloted Bold Lucy in the opener. War Miss covered the six furlongs in 1:15 ft and paid 6.00. The second division of the Requested was run slightly faster when Ben Johnsons Doras Son fought it out with Lou Schlos-sers Sly Tigress from the beginning and drew out under urging from P. J. Bailey to be slightly more than a length before Sly Tigress at the end. Doras Son was timed in 1:14% and he paid 6.80. This was a tough contest from the beginning and Mall Johnny, racing for Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Sop-sic, was only the narrowest of margins back of Sly Tigress and but a head before F. P. Aimes Leos Brandy in a tight finish. Showers Fall Before Opener Showers fell prior to the first race and the weather remained cloudy throughout the afternoon as 9,212 patrins were on hand for the second day of the sport at this course. War Miss flashed into a clear lead shortly after the field was dispatched in the first half of the Requested and was steadied before Lightfoot Lady, with Sunclad close at hand before Cooling Spring. The order of the leaders was unchanged until entering the stretch when Cooling Spring, moving around the outside, was able to dislodge Sunclad from third place. In the resultant drive the contenders gradually decreased the advantage of War Miss, and Cooling Spring, finishing fastest of all, ousted Lightfoot Lady from the runner-up position inside the furlong marker and set out for War Miss. The latter held on stubbornly however, and gave ground very grudgingly enabling her to retain command to the finish line. In the second half of the Requested, Bring Me Home broke first, but Sly Tigress moved up with a rush and took over the pacemaking task going down the back-stretch and around the turn, closely followed by Doras Son. As the turn was completed, jockey Bailey gave Doras Son his Continued on Page Two War Miss and Doras Son Take Split Requested Purse Continued from Page One head and he passed up the pacemaking Sly Tigress before the top of the stretch was reached. The Johnson colorbearer was kept under brisk handling and maintained a clear margin over the favorite in the run home. Sly Tigress was all out to hold the place safe by a head from the fast-finishing Mali Johnny. Despite the fact that she had finished second in her latest outing at Sportsmans Park and was known to have a fondness for an "off" track, Bold Lucy was overlooked in the opener to return 0.40 as she dominated the field of 12 for the six and a half furlongs. Glory Step and Major V. were closely locked in that order for second and third. Phil Town, a first-time starter, was easily best of the band of eight three-year-old non-winners in the second race, coasting to a seven-length score over A La Bud, with third going to Lady Seaton. Phil Town paid and, coupled with Bold Lucy, completed a Daily Double worth 75.
