Marica Purse Tops Lincoln Program Emick and Woolford Farm Each Sending Out Entries In Six-Furlong Offering HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 13.— A six-furlong dash for three-year-olds and older horses under allowance conditions and titled the Marica is the best of the eight races on the mid-week Lincoln Fields program at Hawthorne. Nine good sprinters in seven interests will vie for the ,000 prize as Mrs. G. H. Emick and the Woolford Farm each have named two contestants. Divisions of the Evergold Purse will be offered as the seventh and eighth races at one mile and a sixteenth. The two entries in the headliner loom prominently. Mrs. Emicks Hollyman reached peak condition when he surprised the talent mildly by accounting for a division of the Fairfax Purse, a five-furlong sprint at Sportsmans Park. This distance was generally regarded as too short for the hard-hitting son of Ladysman who can be versatile on occasion. The conditions of the Marica call for Hollyman to carry 117 pounds with the apprentice allowance but the additional distance should be in his favor and, giving his best effort, he should be hard to beat. Handy Lad is the running mate for Hollyman and while this son of Sweep All did not show much to recommend him recently he merits consideration on his best efforts. Leavenworth Resting Since Florida Races The Woolford Farm pair consists of Leavenworth and Devastating, either of whom could be dangerous against opposition of this caliber. Leavenworth has been rested up since his Florida campaign where he trimmed worthy rivals in a seven-furlong allowance race at Gulfstream Park. He should retain that good form and the opposition is within the limitations of his peak performance. Leavenworth will be ably assisted by Devastating who was a creditable sixth to the odds-on and shifty Burgoo Maid in a recent race at Gulfstream Park. The good condition of the daughter of Bow to Me is obvious. While the two entries in the feature appear to hold a strong hand, they may not have things their own way. There is a possibility that the track may not be fast and, in this case, Ben Fogelsons Pomps Gal cannot be overlooked entirely. The willing daughter of Pomponius was a clever winner of the six and a half furlongs River Forest Handicap at Sportsmans Park over a slow track and in preparation for her Marica engagement she breezed a handy three furlongs in :38y5 over the half-mile course. Princess Rena, who will represent Fuller and Goldblatt, ran off before her race on Monday and was declared, but she is none the worse for her unscheduled gallop. She has a victory at Gulfstream Park to recommend her. Mrs. Emil Denemark has named Fire Dust for the feature. The son of Firethorn will be making his seasonal debut, but dockers are extremely sanguine of his chances on the strength of excellent morning trials. Mrs. Valenti will represent her namesake, Mrs. C. Valenti, and this filly must be accorded opportunity to make amends for her recent race in which she had no chance after being forced to race wide at Sportsmans. She was a good second to Pomps Gal previously and has a handy victory at the smaller track to her credit. W. H. Bishops May Fly completes the Marica field and her best recent recommendation is a third in the River Forest Handicap, won by Pomps Gal.
