Fleet West Outgames Mesl at Suffolk Downs Hangs On Courageously to Have Half-Length Advantage at Wire SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 13.— A. Richers Fleet West, a filly who is just as well known for her sharp early speed as her tendency to quit cold in the stretch, hung on with rare courage for the running of the Maurice Chevalier Purse here this afternoon. In a brisk drive she outgamed Mrs. Tilyou Christophers Mesl, pronounced favorite in the field of 11. A crowd of 13,561 viewed the proceedings, only a few of which were cheered at the spotty form of the winning thoroughbreds. Back of Fleet West and Mesl at the line came the Green Hill Stables Cherry Quest, with Mrs. B. F. Listers Boxie in fourth place. The time for the feature was 1:11%, and the winner, an outsider in the betting at 0.60 for , was well handled by Harold Sconza, a veteran from New Orleans. Early indications of the Christotpher outfit pointed to a maneuver that has succeeded several times this season. The stable had Spring Thaw and Mesl running in its colors and, from the manner in which the race was run, it seemed that the strategy was to use Spring Thaw to kill off the pace to pave the way for Mesls late charge. This probably would have worked well had Spring Thaw been able to fulfill his mission, but he was unable to outrun Fleet West and dropped out of contention when the real racing began. While Fleet West and Cherry Quest bounded along into the lead, Prevost, on the favorite, bided his time and seemed well beaten by the time the field had made half of the bend. However, the filly saved considerable ground on the rail and, when they moved into the home lane, he swung to the outside and cut loose. Fleet West, by this time, had put away Cherry Quest and had everything her way until Mesl began her charge. The Christopher miss picked up first one contender and then the other, and she continued with good courage, but the winners early advantage was simply too much to overcome.
