Small Field to Contest Withers Stakes Jet Pilot, Faultless Unlikely to Start Owners Choice Favored in Belmont Parks 5,000 Mile Event on Week-End BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 13.— A small field is in prospect for Saturdays 5,000 Withers Mile, and a huge one for the 0,000 Juvenile, which will also adorn the Belmont Park program on the week-end. Of the star three-year-olds eligible to dispute the mile event, Jet Pilot, I Will, Phalanx, Faultless and Stepfather can be almost positively eliminated The best known of the likely candidates are Mrs. John Hertz Owners -Choice, Greentree Stables Blue Border, William Helis Cosmic Bomb, Waited P. Chryslers Brabancon, C. V. Whitneys Bastogne, and Belaid Studs Hyblaze. Owners Choice, who looms a solid choice to emulate the feat of his stablemate, Count Fleet, who scored in 1943, captured the Swift Stakes here at seven furlongs last week and was drawing away at the end. Brabancon was a fast-closing third in that race and will probably be given another chance at the longer distance on Saturday, having worked a mile in 1*40% on the Belmont main track this morning. However, he was under mild urging in his prep. Bastogne was also on the track, but this winner of the Experimental was merely sent a slow six furlongs in 1:18%. Twenty-Five Juvenile Probables The Juvenile still shapes up as some 25 more or less well-known youngsters against Maine Chance Farms Royal Blood and Striker Pilot. Tomorrows feature is a ,000 test for Class C horses at a mile and sixteenth styled the Westbury Handicap. This event has attracted a field of eight undistinguished middle-distance horses, including William Nobles Kay Gibson, Jayess Stables Cencerro and F. D. Kaplans Campos. Cencerro will probably rule the public choice on the strength of his last victory at Jamaica and the fact that he has showed a liking for the Belmont track. Kay Gibson is an erratic miss who showed little in her last effort behind Elpis, but was a good second in her previous start and won before that. Campos is a South American who won rather cleverly in Florida and may be a little better than generally suspected. The others in the Westbury are Copper Boy, recently claimed by the Marlet Stable frmo Earl Sande; Glen Riddle Farms Soldier Song; Domino Stables Blue Flare, Mrs. C. O. Iselins Indique and Belair Studs Isology. In the long run, there is probably more intrinsic interest in the preceding race, a four and a half furlongs dash for juvenile colts and geldings on the Widener course. There are 19 entered in this event, many of whom are eligible to Saturdays Juvenile.
