Merry Maiden Purse at Havre de Grace To Engage Five Three-Year-Old Fillies f With Honor Accorded Edge; Lord Calvert, Lord Grillo Clash in Bush River Purse HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 13.— Small but well-matched fields were drawn for the two best races on the mid-week program at this Harford County course tomorrow. The twin features are the six furlongs Merry Maiden Purse, for three-year-old fillies, and the one mile and a sixteenth Bush River Purse, for matured routers in Grade D. The Merry Maiden, which will be run as the fifth race, carries a purse of ,500, and five fairly competent fillies were entered overnight. An equal number of routers, aged four and older, comprise the field drawn for the Bush River Purse, which carries a ,000 added purse and has been programmed as the sixth race. In order of their post positions the Merry Maiden field comprises: A. B. Hancocks With Honor, J. N. Barnes Miss Prime, K. N. Gilpins Great Haste H., Mrs. Janon Fishers Laelia, and Victoria Stables Gifted Miss. A homebred daughter of Rhodes Scholar — Lost Horizon, With Honor has the best record of the Merry Maiden quintet, and the racy-looking dark bay filly appears almost certain to rule the favorite. The Hancock miss was a good winner during her juvenile season and, while she failed to annex a stakes, she turned in several creditable performances while engaging some of the best members of her division. With Honor has made two starts in Maryland this spring, finishing second behind the classy Calumet Farm filly, In the Pink, in the six-furlong Anna Marone II. Purse, sixth in the one mile and one-sixteenth Busher Purse in a subsequent engagement, both of which were staged during Pimlicos stake-a-day meeting. With Honors stanchest opposition may be provided by Miss Prime, a chestnut daughter of Swashbuckler — Marshy, who is a speedy miss on occasions, but she was defeated rather handily by fair-to-middling Maryland-breds in her last start at Pimlico. Miss Prime raced right with the early pace in that event, but tired very noticeably in the stretch and her connections are inclined to believe the rather dead Pimlico track was not exactly to the fillys liking. Miss Prime may race vastly improved over the lightning-fast Havre de Grace track. W. Y. Goldsboroughs veteran router, Lord Calvert, heads the five-horse field in the Bush River Purse, his rivals including Gustave Rings Lord Grillo; Mrs. A. Green-bergs Lombock; Mrs. Robert Heighes Zax and Paradise Farms Dog OSullivan. Three of the overnight entries won their last races. Lord Calvert returned to winning form to capture a mile and a sixteenth race last Thursday at Pimlico and behind the eight-year-old gelding were such formidable routers as Bossiney, Mister Chat, Butler and Houlgate. Trainer Frank Bonsai evidently has brought the Goldsborough stalwart to top form and he looms the favorite. Lord Grillo has been on the improve and may prove a stout competitior, although he will be coming off a sprint race. The Argentine-bred colt has been racing with top notchers all spring and has indicated he has attained top form. The speedy Zax has won his last two races, one of which was registered through the disqualification of Service Pilot in a mile and a sixteenth race here during the first meeting. Zax, obviously in his very best form at present, has speed to burn and it would occasion very little surprise were he to take the track at the break and lead the rest of the way home. Dog OSullivan was a smart winner of his last race at Pimlico and he, too, earns a good chance in the wide-open field. Lombock closed well in his last race at Pimlico, suggesting he is ready to show an improved effort.
