Shy Guy Annexes Border City Handicap At Detroit Under Impost of 1 28 Pounds Baird Hand Rides DixianaV Crack Colt to Finish Marker Length Before Miss Mommy PAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 14. — Shy Guy once again demonstrated that he is the leading handicap performer now active in the Middle West when he picked up a steadier of 128 pounds and conceded from 21 to 25 pounds actual weight to his five rivals in the 5,000 Border City Handicap. Jockey R. L. Baird hand rode the Dixiana four-year-old to the finish of this mile and a sixteenth a length in front of Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers good filly, Miss Mommy, who was two and a half lengths in advance of the Popovitz estates Love Sonnet in earning the place. Daylight later Childeric was fourth. Shy Guy earned a net of 1,450 and returned his many followers .20, going over the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45% on a fast race track. There was not much early pace in the race, and the time was two seconds off the course record. Shy Guy was a little impatient in the gate, but broke well from a good start. LeBlanc sent Miss Mommy to the front in ► — — the short sprint to the clubhouse turn, outrunning the choice nearly a length, and as Love Sonnet joined them on the outside, Baird eased Shy Guy back out of trouble. The Dixiana four-year-old was pocketed for the next several sixteenths down the far side while jumping in Miss Mommys tracks. At the end of that lane he still was waiting for a spread which failed to materialize, and Baird sent him to the outside on the final bend. Love Sonnet and Miss Mommy were right together on the lead entering the stretch, but by now Shy Guy was pouring it on and he was lapped on them coming to the eighth pole. Love Sonnet began to tire and as he did Miss Mommy was momentarily in close quarters. Shy Guy drew off about a length with Miss Mommy rallying and coming at him again right at the end. Sir Sprite was the second choice but showed nothing after a flash of early speed. This was Shy Guys third straight stake, as he had won the Ben Ali at Keeneland and the Clark at the Downs, before coming here. Clear and mild weather plus a fast track aided in bringing out a crowd of some Continued on Page Three Shy Guy Wins Border City Under 128-Pound Impost Continued from Page One 21,000 patrons for the half-holiday sport.
