Aunt Jayne Z. Surprises | In Debutante at Downs Leads Lady Mdrquest by Length With Favored Duchess Peg Third CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 14. — -Aunt Jayne Z., promising juvenile daughter of Shakamak — Miss Mary R., carried the brown and green colors of her owner, James C. Ellis, to a smashing and rather surprising triumph over seven other members of her sex in todays forty-ninth running of the 0,000 Debutante Stakes. Cleverly ridden by apprentice Norman Cartwright, who flew to the local course from Detroit to fulfill his engagement, the Ellis home-bred disposed of Calumet Farms front-running and odds-on favorite Duchess Peg inside the stretch and reached the end of the five-furlong journey one length in advance of Mrs. C. A. McCaw, Jr., and J. Johnsons Lady Marquest, who was along in time to earn the runner-up honors by a head over the Calumet color-bearer. Lucas B. Combs Swing Again, M. C. Haddixs Balladette, Brown Hotel Stables Miss Highbrow, "William S. Veenemans Irish Daughter and Leon J. Caillouettes Joan Again comprised the remainder of the formidable field and finished in the order named. The Debutante field was away in perfect alignment without undue delay and Duchess Peg was the first to shown in front-closely followed by the eventual victress, Balladette and Lady Marquest. This running order underwent no change as the group curved into the home lane with the heavily-backed favorite some two lengths in front and apparently going easy. As the field entered the stretch Aunt Jayne Z responded gamely when roused to quickly disppse of Duchess Peg and sprinted into a clear lead which she maintained to the finish. A gala crowd of some 25,000 turf enthusiasts turned out for the afternoon of sporl which was conducted under excellent summer-like conditions.
