Mesmer Wins Commonwealth; Order Flag Drill Scratched SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 14. — Mesmer, sporting the silks of Honeywell Farm, drove to his initial stakes triumph of the current season, defeating Graham and Byrums Fancy Flyer by a neck in the thirteenth running of the Commonwealth Handicap at Suffolk Downs today. A length back of the leadings pair, Fantasy Farms Grand Entry earned the minor award by a like distarTce over the favored Column from the Marlet stable. Columns defeat in the feature continued the parade of favorites that failed to score during the afternoon. The day started off bright and warm attracted a large week- endl gathering of 28,686, but as the horses came on the track for the Commonwealth, patrons were scurrying for cover due to light rain falling. The rain was not damaging and the track remained fast as attested by Mesmers" time of 1:46% for the mile and one-sixteenth. Slightly overlooked in the wagering. The strawberry roan gelding returned 5.00 to lucky ticket holders and earned ,275 for John Deveney, owner of the Honeywell Farm. The Commonwealth lost some of its lustre when Clarence Hartwicks Flag Drill was ordered scratched by the track veterinarian when he discovered the son of Flint Shot had a filled leg in the paddock. Flag Drill was well regarded due to his front-running score in last weeks Governors Handicap.
