JOHN MARSCH — The Chicagoans Whirling Dough registered in yesterdays The Nut Purse, thereby indicating readiness for coming stake engagements at Arlington Park. He was dropped down against such ordinary company that it behooved him to win smartly or be relegated to the ranks of platers. The royally-bred son of Whirl-away— Cash Book, by Bull Dog, decided in favor of the former, and closing with a powerful rush through the stretch he won off to himself in a manner that thoroughly justified his role of .60 for favorite. Four lengths in his wake at the finish was Windsor Farms Dawn o* Peace, while Mrs. A. M. Creechs recent acquisition through claiming channels, Big Ping, was a dead-tired third. A. S. Higgins Chance Voyagp was fourth in the eight-horse field. Don Scurlock had the mount on Whirling Dough and put up a well timed and confident ride. He waited patiently several lengths off the lead until the field straightened away for the stretch drive, moved to the outside at a loss of ground and Whirling Dough ran down his foes with consummate ease. Time for the seven furlongs over the muddy racing strip was 1:26%. The colt carried. 118 pounds. With todays fine victory under his girth, Whirling Dough probably will join his more illustrious stablemate, OP Skipper, in competing in impending stakes at Arlington Park. Colts Second Success Owner John Marsch, a retired Chicago contractor, has been expecting big things of the winning colt since he was acquired. However, this marked his second victory in 23 starts, anything but an impressive record. There seemed to be some suspicion that the colt wouldnt be able to handle the muddy going, for most of the experts had him tabbed as an early odds-on favorite. Thus his liberal return brought cheer to his many backers. Whirling Dough was first to break in the field but Scurlock decided against forcing the pace and allowed him to settle nicely in stride. This put Chance Voyage on the front end momentarily, but Big Ping, who Continued on Page Three Whirling Dough Gains Easy Victory at Washington Park Continued from Page One failed to break with his usual speed, was rushed up between horses and soon had everything his own way, breezing a couple of lengths in the van. Chance Voyage made several attempts to close the gap, but these efforts finally took their toll. After the field straightened for the stretch run, Lady Greenwood moved with a menacing challenge, but she, too, dropped back quickly. Not much was heard from Whirling Dough until shortly before reaching the eighth pole, where he sped to the front and easily and convincingly widened out on his field. Mrs. S. Rosens Podner, a chestnut son of Rhodes Scholar — Kind Annie, proved best of the 0,000 platers in the fifth, secondary feature. The colt was adroitly sent through along the rail at the head of the stretch and when the pacemaking Midchannel darted towards the fence it gave the Rosen color-bearer an advantage that couldnt be overcome. Midchannel, however, was best of the others, beating Roundeleer for the place. Podners triumph marked Harold "Red" Keenes second victory of the afternoon. The New Englander, who rode four winners yesterday, had previously gained the spotlight with the aged Topnard in the second race.
