Fifteen Named for Shevlin Renewal Favor Colonel Mike to Beat Halt, Blue Lancer and Epic Latter, Kings Plate Winner/ Making First Start in U. S.; One Hitter Greentree Hope AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 14.— A field of 15 three-year-olds, including several who rank close enough to the "big three" for comparatively slight improvement to inject them into the balloting when the final roll for honors in the division is taken next fall, vie for honors in the Shevlin Stakes tomorrow. Woodvale Farms Halt is topweight at 123 pounds, while E. P. Taylors Epic, winner of the historic Kings Plate in Canada, and Daniel Hess hard-hitting Blue Lancer get in with 120 pounds each, neither picking up penalties or benefiting by allowances. Halt is penalized for having won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on his one good afternoon of the year. King Ranchs Storm Bird, a maiden, has only 107 to carry, with the others all packing 112. In this group is the probable favorite, Eugene Jacobs Colonel Mike, who finished second to Ponder in the Peter Pan and was again second to Wine List in the swiftly run Kent Stakes at Delaware on Saturday. Eddie Arcaro, who said after the Peter Pan that lie thought he would have beaten Ponder in that race if he had known his mount a little better, will endeavor to make amends on Colonel Mike tomorrow. Atkinson After Fifth Win in Stake* Others who will command support in the Shevlin include Greentree Stables undersized stretch-runner, One Hitter, who had been chasing such as Olympia and Palestinian before finishing second to Going Away in the Yankee Handicap at Suffolk j Downs, William Helis speedy, but erratic Danherst, Mrs. John Hertz Count Victor and Mrs. Aksel Wichfelds Daiquari. Ted Atkinson, who will ride One Hitter tomorrow, has been particularly fortunate in the Shevlin, winning with Le Havre, By Jimminy and Wildfire, successively, and coming -back to triumph again wtih Blue Border in 1947. Incidentally, that was the only stakes victory of the year for the Greentree Stable colt, later gelded, who had been the leading juvenile of 1946. Blue Lancer, Count Victor and Our Quest are the sort to assure a swift pace in the Shevlin, with Colonel Mike capable of either going to the front or coming from behind. In the Jersey Handicap, he forced Olympias pace, while in the Peter Pan he came from the rear ranks, though making his move a furlong too soon. One Hitter is strictly a "come-from-behinder," while Danherst also is expected to do his best running in the stretch. Epic, who is the "dark horse" of the race, has only started twice in his career, preceding his triumph in the Kings Plate with a score in the Kings Plate Trial at six furlongs. He is said to be one of the best horses ever bred in Canada, and impressed dockers while training a£ Jamaica, but there is no line on him in relation to tomorrows field. Like Colonel Mike, he can go to the front or be rated.
