Tidy Sum and Traveler Match Speed A AmongNineNamed For Churchill Dash Meeting of Long-Time Rivals Features Brown Hotel Purse; Endurable Also Well Fancied By J. SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 1. — Brown Hotel Stables Tidy Sum and Henry Forrests Traveler, two of the more popular members of the Downs sprint colony, will renew their rivalry in tomorrows edition of the Brown Hotel Purse. Tidy Sum took the measure of his shifty opponent on several occasions during the Fair Grounds meeting in New Orleans and continued his dominance over the Forrest racer at Oaklawn Park. However, each time the duo met a narrow margin separated them. Under the allowance conditions of the Brown Hotel Purse, Tidy Sum will be asked to parade postward under a 112-pound burden. Traveler has been assigned 108 pounds. Comprising the remainder of the group are Forrests Fine Art, Mill River Stables Ode, Robert W. Athas Syndicate, Circle M Farms Endurable, C. H. Everetts Little Imp, Ray Ankenbauers Porters Broom, and Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Prop. Tidy Sum was forced to accept third honors in his initial start at Keeneland, but returned to competition several days later and turned back a formidable field in the Walnut Springs Handicap. Included among his victims in the latter dash were Endurable and Prop. Tidy Sum again will have the saddle services of Jerry West. Didnt Fancy Track in Phoenix Traveler found a slow strip more than he J could handle in his only start at the Lexington j track and was beaten decisively in the Phoenix Handicap. Since his arrival here the Forrest gelding has been training I satisfactorily and appears in peak condi-I tion. Traveler has always favored a compact ! fast track as could be evidenced by his recording, shattering performances during his i Hot Springs campaign. He should find the prevailing Derby strip to his liking. Fine Art was among the "also rans" in his only t start at Keeneland, but improvement from i that effort can be expected. Endurable was a head to the rear of 1 -] Tidy Sum in the Phoenix and was rapidly ; c overtaking the latter. Weights in the first 1 r meeting of the pair were comparable to • t tomorrows allocations and as a result an-; c other interesting battle should ensue. Endurable, c winner of his previous encounter, ; v will be ridden by Doug Dodson. Ode showed ; c dazzling speed in his initial appearance t before the Louisville enthuslats. He tired 1 slightly s during the late stages of the mile event e won by John Marschs Whirling 1 i Dough in the new track record time of i l:3ft%. Ode was beaten a length and a half by t the winner and Dixianas Shy Guy. Prop placed fourth in the Almahurst i Handicap at the Versailles Pike course in v which he raced wide throughout. Prop has a also been working well and that last start s should have served as a tightener. Porters Brown and Syndicate will be n making their seasonal debuts following fc lengthy rests. The former has always shown a a partiality for the local strip and several 0 of his more impressive victories have been r registered here. Porters Broom chalked up t three successes last year during a limited c campaign; Syndicate, winner of four races h in 1950, has previously come forth with c commendable performances when fresh. A mud-runner n of note, Syndicates chances „ would be augmented considerably in the e event of an off strip," which at this time i is not likely. The Borrow Purse, a four and one-half f, furlongs dash for maiden juveniles, serves a as the chief supporting attraction to the e Brown Hotel Purse.
