R. Norman Charlton Named Steward At Waterford Park i CHESTER, W. Va., May 1.— R. Norman l Charlton, well known New England official J and former chart caller and correspondent t for Daily Racing Form, will serve in the 1 stewards stand at Waterford Park for the i 40-day inaugural meeting at that track i opening May 19. Charlton served in one capacity or an- I other in the "Down East" area ever since 1933 when racing was inaugurated under i pari-mutuel wagering. At that time he was t correspondent for Daily Racing Form, i Later, in 1946, 1947 and 1948 he was the steward representing the Massachusetts s Racing Commission. In addition he has t served in the stand at other New England c race courses, Garden State and Charles I Town. The latter track is owned by the i it Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., operators s of Waterford Park. t It is no exaggeration to say that Charl- e ton was virtually born to racing. He is a t native of Toronto. As a schoolboy he had q daily occasion to pass the famed Woodbine I track. Consequently it was not odd. in I view of contact with owners, jockeys and a trainers, that he took a liking to the sport v and, subsequently, started on a career I which went all the way from helping f around the stables, to exercising horses, to li aiding in the training of thoroughbreds, "V owning them and a lengthly tenure with f; Daily Racing Form. ti
