Chief Mite, Hand Book In Ottawa Stake Pace Divided Winners of Last Weeks Free-For-AII Vie at One Mile AURORA DOWNS, Aurora, HI., May 17. —Chief Mite and Handbook,*divided winners of last weeks ree-fdr-all, get another crack at each other in the second division of the Ottawa Stake Pace, a 15-Class Conditioned ,eariy closer, at Aurora Downs, Friday night. The division in which Chief Mite and Hand Book drew is as tough a field as could be brought together this early racing season. In addition to the mentioned crack sidewheelers, the pace includes True Neil, Tempered Volo, Grattan Truax, Chief Strong,. Vera Grattan and Orphan C. This well-balanced group of horses are slated to go postward in the sixth and ninth events of the nine-race program. Walter "Pee Wee" Welchs True Neil will be as rough as they make them in these two mile trips. The 11-year-old True Volo gelding drew the pole in both heats. Chief Mite, rated one of the fastest leaving mares in the business, starts from fourth in the first outings and comes out of the second position for the repeater. Hand Book gained the outside the first mile, but will be1 third and right alongside Chief Mite for the pay-off mile. Tempered Volo, holder of a 2:03% record over and mile track, and earner of ,547 last season, will be making his 1951 debut in the stake pace. Of this field, and of those who have started this meeting. Chief Strong, Vera Grattan and Orphan C. have yet to enter the winners circle. The other half . of the divided Ottawa Stake Pace, set as the fifth and eighth races, brings together seven horses. From the pole outward, . the field consists of Noble F., G. W. A., Canada Direct, Captain Pointer, Wilson Abbe, Adah Tass and Red McKlyo. Ironically enough, not one of this sevenr" horse field has entered the charmed circle this meeting; Ed Birtchs Canadian special, Canada Direct, came the closest of the lot on opening night when he finished a bang-up second in two miles races behind True Neil. Friday night,v Canada Direct, with trainer-pilot Wilmer Hillock in the sulky, will have an excellent opportunity to break the ice. The nine-year-old , Peter Brooke Jr. bay horse wont have to contend with True Neil and the rest of the "bearcats" in his division. If Red McKlyo is sharp for these two miles, Canada Direct and the rest of them will have to go some to whip -the eight-year -old-Silent Grattan chestnut. He tripped Bay Prince in 2:05% last fall at Aurora and is capable of repeating this performance. Post time for the first race is 8:30 p.m.
