Maglie, Giants Whip Pirates, 4 to 0 Thomson Drives In All Victors7 Runs Sal Registers His Seventh Win of Season andThirteenth Straight Oyer Pittsburgh By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 19.— Sal Maglie scored his seventh victory of the season and his 13th in a row over Pittsburgh dating back to 1950 today as the New York Giants shut out the last place Pirates 4 to 0. It was Pittsburghs sixth straight loss. The victory enabled the Giants to tie the idle Dodgers for first place, but Brooklyn can regain undisputed possession of the lead by beating the Cubs tonight. A crowd of only 4,461 saw Bobby Thomson drive in all four runs with a double and two singles in four trips to the plate. The hero of the Giants pennant victory in 1951 thereby raised his RBI total to 28 and his batting average to .317. Maglie, who has a 14.-1 lifetime record against the Pirates, yielded, seven hits, struck out six and issued only one base on balls. Only one Pirate base runner got beyond first base — in the sixth when George Metkovich singled with two out and raced to third on a single by Gus Bell. Maglie then forced Joe Garagiola to fly out, ending the inning. r Play Errorless Ball The Giants supported Maglies pitching with two double plays and errorless ball in the field. New York took a 1 to 0 lead in the first inning when Davey Williams led off with a double, his fifth straight hit and third double in five trips to the plate, and scored when Thomson doubled to left. The Giants scored two more in the second when Alvin Dark doubled and Wes Westrum walked. They moved up on Mag-lies sacrifice and after Whitey Lockman walked to fill the bases, both scored on Thomsons, single to left. j Bob Friend relieved starter and loser Howie Pollet in the third and the Giants scored their fourth run off him in the fourth when with one out Lockman beat out an infield grounder, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Thomsons single. Williams handled three chances in the field and stretched his string of consecutive chances without an error since he joined the Giants last year to an even 200.
