Sailed Away Registers While Oreo Disappoints Odds-On Choice Runs Fourth in Feature Event at Suffolk Downs By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 19. — It was a sad day for the followers of the favored Oreo in the best offering here today as a crowd of 13,132 fans wagered over 5,000 on J. L. Friedmans horse only to see him finish out of the money at odds of 3 to 5. » Winner of the race was Mario Stables Sailed Away, who scored by a neck over the pace-setting Irving Gushens Martha P., nipping her in the final strides. Roberto Gonzalez, on the winner, lost his whip near the finish, but still got his mount home in time, and I. C. McMahans Tippy Do was a length farther back and a head before the favorite. Sailed Away paid 7.80 to his followers and completed his six-furlong stint in 1:12%. The three-year-old War Admiral colt has been a consistent allowance performer this year, finishing in the money eight out of 12 times, but today was only his second victory of the year. This was the second time in a row that Orctf has been beaten when shorter than even money and he has yet to win a race this season. Martha P. was away first in the race with Oreo close behind and Palaje and Sailed Away following next in order. Tippy Do, Brother March and Dynastic formed a compact group in back of them, while Shell Diver was some distance back in the ruck. Martha P. continued along merrily on the front end, hitting the quarter in :23%, with Oreo under Anthony DeSpirito apparently biding his time. Rounding the turn Martha P. was still in front, while Oreo came to the inside for his bid, Sailed Away loomed up menacingly on the outside, and Tippy Do lodged a challenge on the inside. Straightening away for the run home, Martha P.- was still gamely a neck before Sailed Away, while Oreo was down on the rail and making no inroads whatsoever on the leaders margin. Within the last sixteenth of a mile Sailed Away gradually surged away to win the verdict, as Tippy Do eked out a head verdict over Oreo to cause a lot of show tickets to find their way to the trash barrels. The chalk players, reeling from the sixth race debacle, were pounded again when Mr£. K. Huntleys Graham finished absolutely last in the seventh race. F. M. Poncelets Exemplar came up the winner, and was worth .40, for his two-length, victory over Mrs. J. Purpuras In Taste. Steele and Smiths Mestiza was third in the six-furlong race, entitled the Charles River, where it is hoped no bridge jumpers will be found tonight. Exemplar rattled of his six panels in 1:11% the best time of the day.
