Y., June 13.— Daniel Saints French star Byng scored a clever victory in the Aqueduct National Maiden Hurdle today, reaching the end of about a mile and three-quarters five lengths before Mary A. Rumseys Mantle and Mrs. Henry Obres Coup-de-Vite, who were a nose apart after a furious struggle for second money. Sanford Stud Farms Oneida was another five lengths out of the money, after losing most of his chance by hobbling at an early hedge. George Foot rode Byng, throwing reins and scmbbing a bit at the finish on the five-year-old son of Fair Copy — Briarde, by Rialto. Byng was a solid choice with the crowd of 19,950, paying , though there was a strong play for Esther duPont Weirs Royal Vale, who tired badly after setting the pace for a mile. The Happy Argo Handicap, best of the i " flat races, was a thriller with Woolford Farms Delegate and Mrs. Louis Lazares i Sheilas Reward fighting out a bitter stretch / struggle. Delegate won by inches over his topweighted rival, the spirit champion of the past two years, who was making his seasonal debut. C. H. Johannsen, Jr.s Heap Big Chief, who was in the thick of the i battle to the sixteenth pole, finished a little j more than a length away in third place, two lengths before D .J. Royal 5 Vale, who was making his American debut p, and running his first race over obstacles, i stopped badly, while Coup-de-Vite held on y tenaciously, but succumbed to Mantle in ni the final stride. Meanwhile, Byng went a] about his business, striding and jumping 01 smoothly and winning in a moderate 3:12 s without being fully extended. He seemed sj a bit sore after the race. jr in Todays stake, which was worth ,600 aj at to the winner, was Byngs third victory in w five starts in this country and his first in a S: stake.
