Royal Marvel Set For Yankee Prep Goes in John Alden Handicap Sprint Today at Suffolk as Sharpener for Stake Event By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston. Mass.. June 13. — Eddie Siravos Royal Marvel heads the field for the second running of the John Alden Handicap, featured six-furlong event at Suffolk Downs tomorrow. The three-year-old son of Royal Nap, main hope of the local sophomores against Blue Man in Tuesdays renewal of the 0,000 Yankee Handicap, is top weight of tomorrows line-up with 119 pounds, nine more than he will carry in the rich classic. Royal Marvels owner, who also conditions the colt, decided to run in the John Alden to give his ace a sharpener tmd he rates a good chance of picking up the major portion of the ,000 added purse. Another eligible for the Yankee who is probably taking advantage of tomorrows shorter event is A. W. Halls Poopcha, who is to tote 105 pounds, three more than he is listed at for the "big event." The others in the John Alden and their weights are Mario Stables Sailed Away, 111; Mrs. T. Peznola and Ralph Lentinis Desirable, 107; Annaloro and Tereses Nola Hash, 105; G. S. Glandeys Hay Edy, 105; S. D. McGills Keeping Posted. 104; Mary D. Mayos Psychogenic. 101. and Mrs. B. F. Listers Triple Time at 98 pounds. Beaten by Oreo Royal Marvel scored three straight victories here before he met defeat at the hands of Oreo in the Constitution Handicap on May 24. In that race, the Siravo colt gave four pounds away to the winner, who was turning in his best race of the year and was beaten two lengths. Rested up since that effort, Royal Marvel is reported ready following sharp trials. Roberto Gonzalez, who has ridden the colt in all his local outings, will again be the pilot. Probably the most improved three-year-old on the grounds at this time is Hay Edy and she must be given an outside chance of extending the choice to his utmdst in tomorrows race. The bay daughter of Hay-ride was acquired via the claiming box from a winning race on May 24 for ,000. Since that time she has continued her success against top flight sprinters in her division. In six starts here this year, the filly has won four times and been second in the other two outings. Poopcha downed Triple Time in a mild upset to win his last and the son of Carrier Pigeon must be rated a good chance off that effort. Sparingly raced in his two years of competition, the colt is endowed with good speed and should be in the thick of contention. The same is true of the consistent Desirable, a daughter of Junior Atlas. In four local starts, Desirable has two victories, a second and a third. There is an abundance of speed in the John Alden. but it is doubtful if any of the contenders can match strides with Psychogenic if the son of Psychic — Inkie is allowed to skip along in the early stages of the race. For all of the geldings early foot, however, he still is a member of the maiden ranks, being faint-hearted when the real test begins. The chances of such front-runners as Triple Time, Keeping Posted and Sailed Away appeared endangered with the Mayo gelding in the race. Nola Hash has come up with top-notch efforts during her brief career, but it is doubtful if she can handle her assignment successfully against the array of speed she meets in the John Alden.
