Four Vagrancy Hopefuls Vie Today Renew, Valadium o Measure Strides King Ranch Mare Defeated LaMontagne Filly Last Out, But Has Weight Shift Today AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 19.— A . quintet of fillies and mares will measure i i , strides in the Fairy Chant Handicap over the mile and one-sixteenth distance, the 1 sixth race on the card tomorrow. The name of the overnight offering was I changed from the Miss Woodford probably out of deference to the younger generation. Of the quintet named four are eligible for the Vagrancy Handicap which was j restored to the local stake agenda following a lapse since its original and only, running in 1948. The absentee from the Vagrancy j list is Who Dini one that trainer • Cary Winfrey did not name for the Miami 1 patroness Jan Burke. The event carries a purse of 0,000 j added and of the five named as overnight • starters, Renew, from the King Ranch, is J top weight with 122 pounds the bulk of ; which will be Willie Boland. Next to her is Valadium, racing for Harry LaMontagne, who is at present in Europe, with 120 and j ; jockey Ray York. The LaMontagne colors | were carried to an impressive score in the only running of the Vagrancy by Conniver ; and through the medium of the Fairy Chant trainer Willie Post hopes to get a good if not accurate line on the merits of 1 his starter and her ability to duplicate the feat of her former stable companion. Marta Carries Woodvale Colors Marta is the reliance of the Woodvale , , Stable of Royce Martin and this miss will , carry 116 including Conn McCreary. Thel-ma Berger, from the Joe Brown Stable, has 115 as her assignment and Who Dini will | have 107 and Atkinson. . Overnight students were in accord that Valadium would be favored over Renew on a weight basis with the Aqueduct favorite Thelma Berger absorbing her usual quota 1 of support. Marta and Who Dini are regarded as the outsiders. Who Dini, due to the presence of Atkinson in the irons, will I attract a large following and this may react in a slightly fatter quotation on what ; appears to be the two choices. The Vagrancy is down for decision on 1 Saturday, June 28, and this renewal when 1 closed on May 15 attracted 25 nominees. : i The Vagrancy carries an endowment of ; 5,000 and some surprise was registered when the eligibles were made known. In 1 contrast to the Vagrancy the Gazelle, carrying [ a similar added value and over the I same distance, attracted 44 nominations although restricted to three-year-olds. Of [ . the latter age in the Vagrancy who were i also named for the Gazelle are Dinewisely, Faberose, Fizzhead, Renew, Sufie and Jub-i " ling. Thus owners of 38 three-year-olds 5 • who tound conditions in the Gazelle ap-i pealing did not patronize the Vagrancy. The supporting offering on tomorrows • . program is the Stagecraft Purse for three-year-olds " at seven furlongs. Seven from the J » secondary flight of that age are eligibles. • . The Daily Double offerings comprise large : fields, an assured dozen in the first and j 1 . eleven in the second. I .
